Ceramic inert anodes useful for the electrolytic production of aluminum are disclosed. The inert anodes comprise an oxide of Ni and Fe having a controlled Ni/(Ni+Fe) mole ratio which results in a single-phase structure at the operation temperatures of aluminum production cells. The Ni and Fe oxide material may also have a single-phase structure at the sintering temperature of the material. The single-phase inert anode materials maintain sufficient electrical conductivity at the operating temperatures of the cell, and also possess good mechanical stability.

The conductive metal particles have a number average particle diameter of 5 to 100 &mgr;m, a BET specific surface area of 0.01×103 to 0.7×103 m2/kg, a sulfur element content of at most 0.1% by mass, an oxygen element content of at most 0.5% by mass and a carbon element content of at most 0.1% by mass. The conductive composite metal particles are obtained by coating the surfaces of the conductive metal particles with a high-conductive metal.

A Cu(hfac) precursor with a substituted phenylethylene ligand has been provided. The substituted phenylethylene ligand includes bonds to molecules selected from the group consisting of C1 to C6 alkyl, C1 to C6 haloalkyl, C1 to C6 phenyl, H and C1 to C6 alkoxyl. One variation, the &agr;-methylstyrene ligand precursor has proved to be stable a low temperatures, and sufficiently volatile at higher temperatures. Copper deposited with this precursor has low resistivity and high adhesive characteristics. A synthesis method has been provided which produces a high yield of the above-described precursor.

If the resinous material is thermoplastic, the material may be heated to mechanically bond to contact surfaces. Advantageously, the resinous material may be formed by forcing a resinous matrix containing conductive particles through an annular opening in a stencil. The resulting member allows surfaces to be contacted which may be irregular or may be covered by native oxide layers.
