A clamping load distributor disposed and connecting between a fuel injector body and a clamping device. The clamping load distributor functions as an intermediary to transmit the static clamping load from the clamping device to the fuel injector body. The clamping load distributor includes a cylindrically shaped main body having a bore extending therethrough between an upper surface and a lower surface. The upper surface of the main body being adapted for receiving the clamping load from a clamping device. The lower surface having at least one portion normally contacting the deck of the fuel injector body. The clamping device engages the upper surface of the clamping load distributor at a position axially aligned with a portion of the lower surface that normally does not contact the fuel injector body. The geometric relationship of the clamping load distributor functions to more uniformly distribute the static clamping load across the fuel injector body. By spreading the static clamping load more uniformly across the fuel injector body there is a corresponding reduction in timing plunger scuffing, thereby eliminating or minimizing the occurrence of timing plunger seizure.

A filter within a filter cartridge design is described that includes a sealing structure on an endplate of an outer filter element. Generally, the sealing structure includes an annular flange on the endplate that can directly seal against an interior surface of a housing when the filter cartridge is assembled for use. During filtration, the annular flange prevents a working fluid from bypassing the outer filter element. The sealing flange can seal with the housing in a press fit engagement.

A separable gasket for use in sealing the interface between a gear housing and an engine block as well as the interface between an air compressor and the gear housing includes a first gasket portion constructed and arranged for sealing the interface between the gear housing and the engine block and a second gasket portion constructed and arranged for sealing the interface between the air compressor and the gear housing. A third gasket portion in the form of a perforated score line is positioned between the first gasket portion and the second gasket portion. In the event the air compressor requires servicing, the present invention enables the second gasket portion to be manually flexed and ultimately separated from the first gasket portion so that a replacement gasket can be assembled when the air compressor is reassembled to the gear housing. By separating the second gasket portion from the first gasket portion, the servicing of the air compressor does not necessitate any disassembly of the gear housing from the engine block nor any replacement of the first gasket portion.

A ceramic-metal composite structure which minimizes tensile ceramic loads and accommodates differences in thermal expansion characteristics between a metal member and a ceramic member without reliance on precise feature control for either member. The composite includes a mechanical retainer which allows a loose fitting relationship between the metal and ceramic members. The ceramic member is secured within a receiving bore in the metal member by the retainer in a manner which eliminates the need for precise machining of the ceramic and metal members. The metal member may be configured to accept either an internal or an external mechanical retainer element. The composite ceramic-metal structure of the present invention finds particular utility in forming a durable wear-resistant interface in internal combustion engine actuator or actuating components, such as compression brake master pistons.

The connecting rod (800) has a shank portion (810, 860), a cap portion (820, 870) and projections (830, 880, 882) extending from one or both of the shank (810, 860) and cap portions (820, 870). When the shank (810, 860) and the cap (820, 870) are connected, the projections (830, 880, 882) mate with the opposite side with an interference fit, thereby resisting relative motion between the shank (810, 860) and the cap (820, 870) along the split-line (A′).

An engine system with a gear train to provide engine timing is disclosed. A technique to minimize backlash and noise caused by the gear train is included. An anti-backlash gear assembly useful to reduce backlash in the gear train is also disclosed. One disclosed gear assembly has at least two gear wheels with the circular thickness of the teeth of one gear wheel being less than the circular thickness of the other gear wheel. A gear assembly is also disclosed that has a bias torque of at least about 100 foot-pounds. A device carried on an anti-lash gear assembly to generally align teeth of the assembly for installation is also provided.
