A device for precision measurement of shafts, spindles, or the like calls for two surfaces which are combined with one another, of which one is partially reflecting and the other is roughly fully reflecting. These surfaces reflect an incident light beam independently of one another onto a single optoelectronic target. The target can be read out two-dimensionally and is pixel-oriented. From only a single measurement position, the azimuth and elevation, and the parallel offset between the incident light beam and a center of the reflecting surfaces can be determined.

The spatial position of rollers or other mutually adjacent articles is measured or examined by indirect transport of a reference direction. To this end, an adaptor is placed on one of the rollers. The adaptor is equipped with a light source which emits a light beam substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of a roller. The light beam is sensed by a movable sensor unit. The latter determines, at the same time, the angle of incidence of the light beam according to two axes, relative to the sensor unit, and the orientation of the sensor unit relative to a reference axis system (laboratory system). A multi-axially operating gyroscope is used for the last-mentioned measurement. A suitably programmed electronic system or computer determines, from the two measured values, the orientation of the adaptor and of the roller with respect to azimuth and elevation in the laboratory system. The measured values which are determined can be utilized for the purpose of making a comparison with the corresponding values of further rollers or articles, so that an apparatus for parallelism measurements which is easy to handle is provided.

The security system as presented is used preferredly to monitor paintings and other work of art. Essential component of the security system are suspending elements, for mounting e.g. paintings. The suspending elements also serve to transmit signals (data) or electrical power, for illumination purposes. It is preferred to implement a two wire bus system with the suspending elements. In case an alarm is triggered, the system according to the invention is able to immediately identify and display the time and the place of the objects to be guarded. Several levels of monitoring capabilities are provided, which work in cooperation with hardware consisting of different sensors or transponders. The security system in accordance with one embodiment is connectable to a network.

A method and an apparatus are specified for alignment of the shaft W1 of a rotating machine M1 in a predetermined nominal position by moving the machine M1 on the base, as well as an apparatus for carrying out the method. The instantaneous position of the shaft W1 is detected in a known manner by a sensor device 7, which provides electrical position signals corresponding to the difference between the instantaneous position of the shaft W1 and the shaft nominal position. These position signals, the known relative position of the mounting points 6 of the machine M1 on the base with respect to the predetermined reference points on this base, and other geometric measurement data are used by a computer to calculate correction values for position corrections to be made at the individual mounting points 6 of the machine M1, and these correction values are brought to the attention of the alignment technician 4, for the magnitude and direction for each mounting point 6. According to the invention, the current correction values which, until now, have been indicated only visually according to the prior art, are transmitted acoustically, for the individual mounting points 6, to the alignment technician 4. The alignment technician 4 can thus pay his full attention to the position corrections to be carried out at the mounting points (6).

The system employs only a two-wire connection between control unit and actuating drive. An apparatus for detecting and monitoring changes in the position of rotating shafts in which a light ray generally parallel to the shafts is directed to measurement positions (which are offset from each other by about 90.degree. in the circumferential direction of the shafts) to a rectangular prism, which reflects the ray to a ray receiver, which supplies signals, which change with any change in the position of the shafts. In known apparatus for making possible a continuous monitoring of the alignment condition of coaxial shafts, the ray source and the ray receiver are arranged on one shaft and a prism is arranged on the other. The signals of the ray receiver and the power supply thereof require the use of complex and unreliable transmission means between the rotating and stationary parts of the apparatus. According to the invention light rays (S and S'), come from two separate source-receiver pairs (2.sub.1,9.sub.1, and 2.sub.2 and 9.sub.2) each pair having a ray source and a ray receiver which are fixed in a reference system (X,Y and M) in which the shaft or shafts rotate. As a result it is possible to dispense with complex and unreliable transmitting means for the signals from the receivers and for the power supply to the pairs of sources and receivers. The apparatus in accordance with the invention is suited both for the monitoring of the position of a single rotating shaft and also for the continuous monitoring of the alignment condition of coaxial shafts.
