摘要: An electronically controllable pneumatically powered valve actuating mechanism for use in an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The engine is of the type having engine intake and exhaust valves with elongated valve stems. The actuator has a power piston reciprocable along an axis and adapted to be coupled to an engine valve and a pneumatic arrangement for moving the piston, thereby causing an engine valve to move in the direction of stem elongation between valve-open and valve-closed positions. The pneumatic arrangement includes a pair of control valves which are movable relative to the piston for selectively supplying high pressure air to the piston. Each control valve includes a thin walled portion having an inner cylindrical surface which slidingly engaging a portion of one of the enlarged diameter cylindrical portions of the piston. The inner cylindrical surface includes an end portion of enhanced strength and reduced inner diameter which is too small to receive the enlarged diameter cylindrical portion of the piston. The piston includes enlarged diameter cylindrical portions which cooperate with the motion of the corresponding control valve to stop the supply of high pressure air to the piston. A pneumatic damping arrangement imparts a first decelerating force to the piston when the engine valve reaches a first separation from one of said valve-open and valve-closed positions to begin reducing engine valve velocity as the engine valve approaches said one position, and imparts a second lesser decelerating force to the piston when the engine valve reaches a second lesser separation from that one position. A resilient member cooperates with and is deformed by the air control valve to prevent the application of piston moving air pressure to the piston when the air control valve is in the closed position, and included is an arrangement for adjustably selecting the amount of deformation of the resilient member when the air valve is in the closed position. An initializer to force the piston to one of its extreme positions upon start up, a pressure regulator, and an arrangement for minimizing surface tension induced valve sticking problems are also disclosed.

A pneumatic damping arrangement imparts a first decelerating force to the piston when the engine valve reaches a first separation from one of said valve-open and valve-closed positions to begin reducing engine valve velocity as the engine valve approaches said one position, and imparts a second lesser decelerating force to the piston when the engine valve reaches a second lesser separation from that one position. A resilient member cooperates with and is deformed by the air control valve to prevent the application of piston moving air pressure to the piston when the air control valve is in the closed position, and included is an arrangement for adjustably selecting the amount of deformation of the resilient member when the air valve is in the closed position. An initializer to force the piston to one of its extreme positions upon start up, a pressure regulator, and an arrangement for minimizing surface tension induced valve sticking problems are also disclosed.

摘要: A bistable electronically controlled pneumatically powered transducer for use, for example, as a valve mechanism in an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The transducer armature, an engine valve, for example, is powered by a pneumatic source and includes pneumatic damping and energy recovery as it nears its destination position. The armature is held in each of its extreme positions by a permanent magnet latching arrangement and is released therefrom to be pneumatically driven to the other extreme position by an electromagnetic arrangement which temporarily neutralizes the permanent magnetic field of the latching arrangement. A multiplicity of engine operating modes are also disclosed including operation of an engine in a six stroke cycle mode, and a unique intake valve timing scheme where the intake valve closure is delayed beyond bottom dead center of its associated cylinder with the delay being greater at lower engine speeds and less at higher engine speeds.

摘要: A fast acting valve actuator for actuating an intake or exhaust valve in an internal combustion engine of a type which is hydraulically powered and command triggered is disclosed and includes a cylinder with a power piston having a pair of opposed working surfaces or faces reciprocable within the cylinder along an axis between first and second extreme positions. A cylindrical control valve is located radially intermediate the reservoir and the cylinder, and is movable upon command to alternately supply high pressure fluid from a reservoir of high pressure hydraulic fluid to one face and then the other face of the power piston causing the piston to move from one extreme position to the other extreme position. The cylindrical control valve may be a shuttle valve which is reciprocable along the axis of the power piston between extreme positions with control valve motion along the axis in one direction being effective to supply high pressure fluid to move the piston in the opposite direction. Both the control valve and the piston are stable in both of their respective extreme positions and the control valve is spring biased toward a position intermediate the extreme positions. The latter portion of piston motion during one operation of the valve actuator is effective to cock this spring and bias the control valve preparatory to the next operation.

摘要: A method of and apparatus for starting and accelerating a vehicle through a range of vehicle speeds during which the vehicle internal combustion engine is operated in a plurality of different operating modes is disclosed. Different operating modes are available during normal operation. Under high demand conditions, the engine may be run as a conventional inefficient but effective throttled engine or converted to operation in a fourth mode as a two-stroke cycle engine. The vehicle management system includes a first read only memory for storing a fixed table of engine operating parameters corresponding to various engine conditions, and a random access second storage means for storing a table of engine operating parameters corresponding to various engine conditions with the second table being initially the same as the first table. The system responds to sensed engine conditions to modify the parameters in the second table and controls the vehicle in accordance with the parameters stored in the second table. Both short term modification to accommodate dynamic changes in the sensed engine conditions and long term modification to compensate for relatively slow changes in the engine and the management system are made to the information in the random access memory. The modifications may be on an overall engine basis or an individual cylinder basis.

摘要: A bistable electromechanical transducer is disclosed having an armature reciprocable between first and second positions, a permanent magnet latching arrangement for maintaining the armature in the respective positions, and an electromagnetic repulsion arrangement operable when energized to dislodge the armature from the position in which the armature was maintained and causing it to move to the other of the positions. In a preferred embodiment, the transducer takes the form of an electronically controllable valve mechanism for use in an internal combustion engine and has an engine valve with an elongated valve stem along with the electromagnetic repulsion arrangement for causing the valve to move in the direction of stem elongation between valve-open and valve-closed positions. An arrangement for decelerating the valve as the valve nears the respective valve-open and valve-closed positions includes at least two separate damping arrangements jointly effective to slow valve motion as the valve gets close to said one position. The damping may include dynamic breaking and energy recovery. The mechanism may also include a housing at least partially surrounding the valve stem and an arrangement for circulating the engine liquid coolant through a portion of the housing.

摘要: An electronic ignition system for an internal combustion engine having a timing signal source comprising an oscillator for providing a carrier signal; an electronic network connected to the oscillator and including a sensor means for providing a reactance which varies as a function of the rotational position of the engine, the network further including a reference means for comparing the reactance of the sensor means and providing modulation of said carrier signal; a detector for demodulating the modulated carrier signal and providing an output signal indicative of a predetermined rotational position of the engine. The output signal is supplied to switching circuitry for switching the primary of an ignition coil and providing a high voltage output pulse at a time synchronized with said predetermined rotational position of the engine.
