    摘要: Disclosed herein are visual display systems and methods capable of having shifted bit-weights in neutral density filtering (NDF) applications. In one embodiment, a method (200) of displaying an image comprises transmitting light through an optical filter (17) comprising at least one high transmissivity portion configured to output light at an initial intensity, and at least one low transmissivity portion configured to output light at a lower intensity than the initial intensity, where the initial intensity and lower intensity output light illuminates a spatial light modulator (14). The method also includes providing a plurality of data bits (non-ND) from a predetermined number of data bits (B0–B7), where each of the plurality comprises a pulse-width longer than a load-time for operating the spatial light modulator (14). In this embodiment, the method further includes providing at least one data bit (ND) from the predetermined number of data bits, where the at least one data bit comprises an initial pulse-width less than the load-time and comprises an adjusted pulse-width greater than the load-time. Then, the method further comprises operating selected portions of the spatial light modulator (14) in coordination with the initial intensity and lower intensity output light using the pulse-widths of one or more of the plurality of data bits (non-ND) and the adjusted pulse-width of the at least one data bit (ND).

In one embodiment, the method includes: (1) field sequentially operating an array of emitters to generate a sequence of light beams, each light beam comprising an uncompensated saturated color, (2) determining a compensated target color from the uncompensated standard color, the compensated target color determined based upon a variation in the uncompensated standard color and variations in at least two other uncompensated standard colors, (3) combining a first light beam of a first color with a second light beam of a second color to produce said compensated target color, the first and second light beams combined in an optical path to travel concurrently, the combination of the first and second light beams resulting in a composite color coordinate and without exceeding the etendue limit and (4) directing the combination of the first and second light beams at the spatial light modulator, said modulator operable to receive the combination and produce a desired color on a display.

An embodiment comprises determining a dim color from colors used in representing an image, adjusting the dim color to increase an available display time for a non-dim color used to represent the image, adjusting the non-dim color using the available display time, and generating a color sequence based on the adjusted dim color and the adjusted non-dim color. The pixel intensities of a dim color are increased, permitting a shortening of the display time of the dim color. The newly freed display time can be reallocated to all colors to increase the amount of light used to display the image, thereby increasing image brightness or altering color point.
