The second capacitive device (130) is coupled to the control terminal of a third switch (114), which is coupled between the first capacitive device (120) and a potential source like the charging conductor (32m). The second capacitive device (130) is used to sample the voltage across the first capacitive device (120), which enables the third switch (114) if of an appropriate value, thus providing a conductive path between the first capacitive device (120) and the potential source. This arrangement allows for a low-power data refresh mode of the matrix array elements (100) with polarity inversion in subsequent refresh cycles.

An amplification circuit comprises a capacitor arrangement (42) and a switching arrangement The capacitor arrangement has a first capacitor (C2) which has a voltage-dependent capacitance and a second capacitor (C1) (which may also be voltage-dependent). The circuit is operable in two modes, a first mode in which the input voltage is provided to one terminal of at least the first capacitor, and a second mode in which the switching arrangement causes charge to be redistributed between the first and second capacitors such that the voltage across the first capacitor changes to reduce the capacitance of the first capacitor, the output voltage being dependent on the resulting voltage across the first capacitor. The invention uses a voltage controlled capacitance in combination with charge sharing between capacitors, which has the result of providing a voltage amplification characteristic. This arrangement can thus be used for the amplification of an analogue voltage, or the boosting of a fixed level (i.e. digital voltage). Thus, the circuit of the invention can be used for level shifting or amplification, for example for use in the pixels of an active matrix array device.

An active matrix liquid crystal (LC) display device, comprising in a display area (25) an array of picture elements (12) each having a picture element electrode (15) which together with an opposing common electrode (24) defines an LC display element (21) and a storage capacitor (20) connected to the picture element electrode, includes adjustment means (40,34) for adjusting drive signals applied by a drive circuit (35) to the picture elements (12) in accordance with changes in the LC capacitance. The adjustment means comprises an oscillator circuit (40) which is coupled to at least some of the picture elements in the array and whose oscillation frequency is determined by a capacitance associated with those picture elements and dependent on the capacitances of their LC display elements. The oscillator circuit may be coupled, via switch means (50,61,72), to a storage capacitor line (22) interconnecting the storage capacitor (20) of the picture elements (12) or to the common electrode (24). The oscillator circuit may be integrated on a substrate of the device, together with the picture element drive circuitry (35).

Addressing the sub pixels through a common switch reduces the effective capacitance of the column conductor. By appropriate control of the switches (T1-T4) the pixels can be driven in a first mode in which the common switch (T1) is operated to control the simultaneous addressing of the sub pixels (P1-P4) with a data signal, for example, for a video display with full grey scale capability, and in a second mode in which the switches (T1-T4) are controlled sequentially to allow different data signals to be applied to the individual sub pixels, for example, as required for a low power standby mode of operation with limited grey scale and colour capability.
