An elevator controller which uses an acceleration command signal that has as its initial value a start shock compensation torque which will offset the unbalance torque caused at the time of starting. From the completion of elevator car acceleration to the start of deceleration, the acceleration command is gradually increased or decreased to control the motor so as to provide a smoother motion of the car. After the inception of the car deceleration a velocity command is issued which decreases with the reducing distance between the car and the destination floor.

A pulse generator is coupled to a car drive motor directly coupled to a sheave, over which a rope suspending an elevator car is passed, and the position of the car is calculated through the counting of pulses produced from the pulse generator. First and second car position detectors for detecting respective first and second car positions are provided within a hatchway, and the number of pulses produced during a period from the actuation of the first car position detector till the actuation of the second car position detector is detected. A count value for calculating the car position is corrected according to the difference between the detected pulse number and a reference pulse number corresponding to the distance between the first and second car position detectors, thereby effecting the compensation for the wear of the sheave and rope to improve the precision of the car position detection.

In a controller for an AC elevator in which the frequency of AC power applied to a driving induction motor is varied by a frequency converter, the output frequency of the frequency converter when the elevator is running at its rated speed is at least as high as the frequency of the AC supply, and the AC supply is applied directly onto the induction motor without any frequency conversion during low-speed running, so that the elevator can be run slowly without using the frequency converter.

In order to control an apparatus, such as a rolling mill, a control device may use a pre-set operation pattern to generate a pre-set command signal, which is then modified. That first modification may be part of a feedback loop in dependence on the variation of a variable operation device of the apparatus, on a plurality of pre-set signals may be combined by fuzzy logic. Then the relationship between the modified pre-set command signal and the variation of the variable operation device is investigated to generate a compensation signal which is used to modify further the pre-set command signal. In a feedback loop, that further modification may compensate for changes in the operating point of the loop, due to changes in the apparatus being controlled. In a fuzzy logic arrangement, the compensation signal may be a further control pattern developed by the control device itself, which is combined with the pre-set patterns by fuzzy logic. The control device may be in the form of a series of modules.
