An optical connector latch to optically couple at least one optical fiber ferrule on an interface housing with an optics receptacle mount on an instrument and a method of using the same. The optical connector latch comprises one or more shell pegs adapted to advance the interface housing into engagement with the optics receptacle mount. One or more ferrule pins are adapted to extend through latch holes in the interface housing and latch holes in the optics receptacle mount to engage with the optical fiber ferrule. A drive mechanism is provided to drive the shell pegs and the ferrule pins toward the optics receptacle mount.

The boot releasably mates with and provides an interference/friction fit to the probe. The tissue-engaging surface surrounds and extends from the boot. A window in the base member extends into the boot to transmit light between the probe and tissue. A layer of optically transparent material covers the window on the tissue-engaging surface. Adhesive on the tissue-engaging surface of the base member releasably secures the probe to the tissue being analyzed.

The detector is coupled to the receive fibers to generate electrical signals representative of the light received at the receive fibers. The processor/controller is coupled to the detector and initiates a calibration procedure when the calibration light signal is not detected.

A head suspension for supporting a read/write head over a disk in a magnetic disk drive. The suspension includes a load beam having a rigid region and proximal and distal ends, with a base on the proximal end and a flexure on the distal end. A spring region is located between the base and rigid region of the load beam. The spring region includes a pair of arms which extend between the base and rigid region to form a cutout, and a plurality of load adjustment frets which extend across the cutout between the base and rigid region. One or more of the frets can be severed by a laser beam to lower the gram load of the suspension. The gram load of the suspension can be increased by shrinking the frets through exposure to the laser beam. Gram load adjustments can be made with the suspensions in a disk stack assembly by directing the laser beam to the frets through an optical fiber.

A spectrophotometric instrument including a source of measurement light signals having measurement light wavelengths, and a probe having a tissue-engaging surface, a plurality of send fibers coupled to the measurement light signal source for transmitting the measurement light signals to the tissue-engaging surface, and a plurality of receive fibers for receiving light including the measurement light signals after the measurement light has been transmitted through the tissue. The instrument also has reference signal optics coupled to the measurement light signal between the measurement light signal source and the tissue-engaging surface for transmitting a reference light signal portion of the measurement light signal, a detector for generating electrical signals representative of the measurement light signals and the reference light signals, optical paths for coupling the measurement light signal from the receive fibers and the reference light signal portion from the reference signal optics to the detector, and an optical path control for selectively allowing either the measurement light signal portion or the reference light signal portion to the detector. The optical path control enables the detector to output a reference light sample value when the reference light signal portion is coupled to the detector, and to output a measurement light sample value when the measurement light signal portion is coupled to the detector.
