A premixed partial oxidation (POx) syngas generator is provided. The syngas generator includes a premixing device configured to mix a fuel stream and oxygen in a premixing region to form a gaseous pre-mix. The premixing device includes a fuel inlet configured to introduce the fuel stream within the premixing device and a flow conditioning device configured to pre-condition the fuel stream. The premixing device also includes an oxygen inlet configured to introduce oxygen into the fuel stream to facilitate premixing of the fuel stream and oxygen in the premixing region located downstream of the flow conditioning device. The syngas generator also includes a combustion chamber configured to combust the gaseous pre-mix from the premixing device to produce a synthesis gas enriched with carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas.

A multi-stage combustion fuel reformer (20) wherein heat energy from a leaner-burning stage (22) is used to accelerate the fuel reforming kinetics of a richer-burning stage (28). The two stages may be axially arranged (36) or radially arranged (50) with respect to each other. Both stages (64, 66) may utilize gas-phase combustion; or both stages (78, 82) may utilized catalytic combustion; or both gas-phase ((90) and catalytic combustion (92) may be used together. The multi-stage reformer (112) may form part of a gas-to-liquid fuel reforming system (110).

In particular, the invention provides virus-like particles comprising at least one composite polypeptide. Such virus-like particles have antigenic epitopes of two or more circulating strains of a non-enveloped virus and produce an increase in antisera cross-reactivity to one or more circulating strains of the non-enveloped virus. Methods of making composite virus-like particles and vaccine formulations comprising composite virus-like particles are also disclosed.

The combustor assembly includes a first combustion zone and a second combustion zone. The present invention is directed toward methods for the production of non-infectious, replication-deficient, immunogenic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-like particles. These particles are prepared from a recombinant expression vector comprising a heterologous promoter operatively connected to a DNA molecule comprising a modified HIV genome devoid of the long terminal repeat (LTR) regulatory regions but containing at least the gag and pol genes in their natural genomic arrangement. This vector is introduced into mammalian cells to produce the particles of interest. These particles should prove useful in a number of diagnostic, virologic, and immunologic applications.

This invention is directed towards nucleic acid molecules capable of producing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) retrovirus-like particles, which are non-infectious, replication defective, and immunogenic. Recombinant HIV genomes were generated that are devoid of long terminal repeats (LTRs) but contain a heterologous, inducible metallothionein promoter. Additional modifications have been made to the primer binding site, pol, vif, and env coding regions. Upon transfection into a suitable host these DNA molecules are capable of producing HIV retrovirus-like particles that lack genomic RNA. These non-infectious particles will provide suitable antigens for HIV diagnostic assays and immunogenic preparations.
