    摘要: Clearcoat coating composition for automotive exterior coatings with improved intercoat adhesion to a subsequently applied coating layer and improved flexibility contains (a) a first vinyl copolymer prepared from a monomer mixture including no more than about 35% by weight of nonfunctional monomers that has carbamate functionality and hydroxyl functionality, at least part of the hydroxyl functionality being on monomer units including an optionally branched alkyl group having at least about six carbon atoms; (b) a second vinyl copolymer having hydroxyl functionality, preferably primary hydroxyl functionality; and (c) a curing agent component that includes at least an aminoplast curing agent and optionally a polyisocyanate curing agent. The polyisocyanate curing agent is preferably blocked with a blocking agent that volatilizes during the cure reaction, regenerating a reactive isocyanate group.

    摘要: Disclosed is a method for making nongelled functional addition polymers from linear unsaturated anhydrides. The method subjects a linear unsaturated anhydride compound, an active hydrogen compound, and an epoxide compound to reaction conditions such that each of the following three reactions occur: (i) polymerization of polymerizable C═C bonds, (ii) ring opening of an anhydride functional group of the linear unsaturated anhydride compound by the active hydrogen compound to create an acid functional group, and (iii) reaction of the acid functional group resulting from the anhydride ring opening with the epoxide compound. At the time of reaction (iii), the acid functional group resulting from the anhydride ring opening may be selected from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, a polymer, or both. In one embodiment, the method does not include the physical removal of any acid functional monomers or polymerization products. Also disclosed are a curable coating composition and a coated substrate.

    摘要: The present invention provides a coating composition containing 1) a carbamate-functional resin having in its structure a hyperbranched or star polyol core, a first chain extension based on a polycarboxylic acid or anbydride, a second chain extension based on an epoxy containing compound, and having carbamate functional groups on the core, the second chain extension, or both; and 2) a second resin containing functional groups reactive with the carbamate groups on the carbamate-functional resin. In one embodiment, the coating compositions are used as a cloarcoat to be applied over a basecoat to form a composite coating. The compositions exhibit a combination of desirable properties, such as scratch and mar resistance, resistance to environmental etch, good intercoat adhesion, and high solids.

    摘要: A method for reducing the molecular weight of aminoplast compounds, the aminoplast compounds obtained thereby, and coating compositions containing said aminoplast compounds are provided. The reduced molecular weight aminoplasts are obtained by reacting (a) an aminoplast compound, having a total number (y) of reactive substituents on the amino nitrogens of the aminoplast, where y=(E.times.M) and E=equivalents per mole of aminoplast and M=total number of moles of aminoplast, wherein the reactive substituents are selected from the group consisting of --NH, alkylol, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, and mixtures thereof and(b) at least one carbamate compound selected from the group consisting of unsubstituted and substituted primary carbamate compounds, unsubstituted and substituted secondary carbamate compounds and mixtures thereof, in the presence of primary or secondary alcohols, at temperatures under 150.degree. C., and at pressures ranging between atmospheric pressure and 20 atm pressure, to form a functionalized aminoplast compound, wherein at least one and up to (y-1) of the amino substituents on the aminoplast are substituted with the carbamate functionality.

    摘要: A coating for improved resistance welding of galvanized steel parts or sheets comprises a binder, and a metal phosphide pigment, preferably a ferrophosphorus pigment, having a particle size of from about 0.1 to about 30 microns. The pigment can also include up to about 40% by weight of an additional metal such as tin, aluminum or lead, which can be combined with the metal phosphide in pigment form or deposited onto the surface of the particles. The coating can be applied to either the faying or non-faying surfaces of the galvanized steel, or to the resistance welding electrode, and may be removed, if desired, after the welding operation.The advantages of the present invention include a significant reduction in welding current and an increase in the weldability lobe width, a restoration of the dynamic resistance beta peak, and an increase in electrode life.
