There is provided a device for bonding ceramic structural bodies. In the state in which a set of ceramic structural bodies provided with a bonding agent between bonding surfaces and provided with elastic sleeves disposed on a peripheral surface of the set of the structural bodies are placed in a tubular container with an elastic sheet disposed between the elastic sleeves and the tubular container, the device is able to charge a hydrostatic pressure medium between the tubular container and the elastic sheet to press and bond the structural bodies. By bonding the ceramic structural bodies with the device, it may provide accurate positioning of the bonding surfaces. It may also provide a uniform distance between bonded surfaces, and reduce the number of bonding operations, thereby affording an excellent working efficiency.

In a method in which opening end portions of a large number of through channels 3 divided by partition walls 2 and extending in an axial direction in a honeycomb structure 1 including the through channels, the method comprises the steps of: sealing the opening end portions using the above-described sealing material. Sealed portions 10 are formed in the opening end portions of the through channels 3 by the sealing material. There are disclosed a sealing material, a sealing method for a honeycomb structure, and a sealed honeycomb structure in which less kinks are generated in the sealed portions, and a depth in each sealed portion fluctuates little.

There is provided a honeycomb structure 1 produced by bonding a plurality of honeycomb segments 12 into one piece via a bonding layer 8, each segment 12 having a number of through-holes 3 divided from each other by porous partition walls 2 and extending in the axial direction of the honeycomb segment. The bonding layer 8 comprises at least one cement layer 10 and at least one undercoat layer 9 present between the honeycomb segment 12 and the cement layer 10. There is provided a process for producing a honeycomb structure 1, wherein bonding the honeycomb segments 12 comprises applying at least one layer of an undercoat on each honeycomb segment 12, applying at least one layer of a cement, and bonding the honeycomb segments into one piece. The honeycomb structure has a high bonding strength and hardly gives defects such as cracks in bonded portion.
