The present invention provides a cubic boron nitride sintered body, which achieves both of superior chipping resistance and wear resistance.In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, a cubic boron nitride (cBN) sintered body contains cubic boron nitride particles and a bonding material used for bonding the cBN particles to one another. This sintered body is constituted by cBN particles in a range from 70 vol % to 98 vol % and a residual bonding material made from a Co compound, an Al compound and WC and a solid solution of these. A hard sintered body for a tool contains 25 to 47 vol. % of cBN, 40 to 70 vol. % and especially less than 45 vol. % in total of a carbo-nitride, and a boride of Ti, and 2 to 20 vol. % in total of a boride and a nitride of Al. In the carbo-nitride of Ti, the ratio of carbon to nitrogen is in the range of 60:40 to 30:70. In this hard sintered body, cBN particles are bonded to each other through binder phases. The obtained hard sintered body for a tool is excellent in wear resistance and chipping resistance for high-speed cutting of hardened steel.

A sintered body for high-accuracy working tools is obtained by sintering powder mixture containing at least 45 percent by volume and not more than 60 percent by volume of cubic boron nitride powder having an average particle size of not more than 2 .mu.m and having a remainder formed of binder powder under a superhigh pressure. The binder contains at least 5 percent by weight and not more than 15 percent by weight of Al and at least 2 percent by weight and not more than 20 percent by weight of W, and has a binder remainder formed of a Ti compound or compounds. The atomic ratio of Ti contained in the binder to a transition metal element or elements belonging to any of the groups IVa, Va and/or VIa of the periodic table including Ti is at least 2/3 and not more than 97/100. In the structure of the sintered body, cubic boron nitride crystals are bonded with each other through bonding phases formed by the binder. A cBN sintered body excellent in chipping resistance and wear resistance in working difficult-to-machine centrifugally cast iron is provided. The present invention is directed to a cBN sintered body composed of a cBN component not lower than 50 volume % and not higher than 90 volume % or not lower than 40 volume % and not higher than 85 volume %, characterized in that the cBN sintered body contains alumina and zirconia not lower than 9 volume % and not higher than 50 volume % and a weight ratio of zirconia/alumina is not lower than 0.1 and not higher than 4. A tool including the cBN sintered body according to the present invention in a portion involved with cutting achieves improved performance in working difficult-to-machine centrifugally cast iron as compared with a conventional tool made of a cBN sintered body, because the cBN sintered body is excellent in strength, hardness and toughness.
