Synthetic stevensite composed of stevensite-type sodium magnesium phylosilicate of which metallic components consist essentially of magnesium, sodium and silicon. The synthetic stevensite is characterized by having an X-ray diffraction peak at a spacing of 16 to 26 .ANG. when treated with ethylene glycol. It can be produced by a process comprising hydrothermally treating an aqueous composition containing basic magnesium carbonate and a silica-sodium component selected from the group consisting of (i) sodium silicate, (ii) sodium silicate and amorphous silica, and (iii) amorphous silica and sodium silicate.

Disclosed is a composite body comprising amorphous and porous silica or silica-alumina and a layer of an aluminum-containing phylosilicate formed on surfaces of primary particles of the silica or silica-alumina. This composite phylosilicate is obtained by reacting a water-soluble silicate, a water-soluble zinc salt or magnesium salt and a water-soluble aluminum salt or aluminate in an aqueous medium containing a sol or gel of silica or silica-alumina. This composite phylosilicate has a large specific surface area and a large pore volume and has both the properties of a solid acid and the properties of a solid base.

A decolorized oyster extract concentrate is formed by an adsorption purification treatment using a specific inorganic lamellar magnesium phyllosilicate compound and a concentration treatment. Coloring components can be effectively removed without substantial reduction of the contents of taste components and nutrients. The decolorized oyster extract concentrate is very valuable as a seasoning or healthy food.

A shellfish extract concentrate is prepared by subjecting an extract of a shellfish (exclusive of oyster) having a solid concentration not higher than 30% by weight to an adsorption purification treatment with an adsorbent composed mainly of a water-insoluble inorganic magnesium compound, which has a specific surface area of at least 50 m.sup.2 /g, and concentrating the refined liquid in a substantially non-oxidizing atmosphere. In this shellfish extract concentrate, black and blackish brown coloring components are not contained, and flavor components and nutrients are not substantially lost. Accordingly, this shellfish extract concentrate is excellent in taste, flavor and hue.

Disclosed is a filler for a heat-sensitive recording paper, which comprises an amorphous silicate having a composition represented by the following oxide molecular ratio:MO:SiO.sub.2 =0.01:1 to 1.1:1wherein M stands for at least one member selected from the group consisting of calcium, barium and zinc, or a product obtained by partially neutralizing said silicate with carbonic acid, said filler having a BET specific surface area of 10 to 70 m.sup.2 /g and a bulk density of 0.14 to 0.30 g/cc and also having such a secondary particle size distribution that secondary particles having a size smaller than 4 .mu.m, as determined by the centrifugal precipitation method, occupy at least 70% by weight of the total particles.
