A pillar-shaped honeycomb structure including a plurality of first cells extending from an inlet side end surface to an outlet side end surface, and a plurality of second cells extending from the inlet side end surface to the outlet side end surface, with a porous partition wall interposed therebetween, wherein a porous film having a porosity higher than that of the partition walls is provided on a surface of each of the first cells, and at a cross-section orthogonal to the direction in which the first cells of the pillar-shaped honeycomb structure filter extend, the average thickness of the porous film in the central portion is larger than the average thickness of the porous film in the outer peripheral portion.

A manufacturing method of a honeycomb formed body includes a forming step of extruding a coupled forming raw material billet from a honeycomb body forming die to obtain a honeycomb-shaped formed product, the coupled forming raw material billet having a colorant applied on at least one of coupling surfaces between each forming raw material billets to be coupled; a cutting step of cutting the formed product to obtain a plurality of honeycomb formed bodies; and a separating step of separating the plurality of honeycomb formed bodies into a colorant-containing honeycomb formed bodies and a colorant non-containing honeycomb formed bodies.

A manufacturing method of a honeycomb structure includes a forming step of preparing a forming raw material containing a cordierite forming material and an inorganic binder, and kneading and forming the prepared forming raw material to have a honeycomb shape; and a firing step of firing the prepared formed body. In the forming step, as the inorganic binder, smectite is used in which at least parts of interlayer metal cations are ion-exchanged with non-metal cations. In the smectite, a total amount of sodium to be contained in the smectite is 1.6 mass % or less in terms of oxides to 100 mass % of the smectite. A content ratio of the smectite in the forming raw material is 0.5 parts by mass or more and 4.0 parts by mass or less to 100 parts by mass of the cordierite forming material.

There is disclosed a honeycomb structure. A honeycomb structure includes a pillar-shaped honeycomb structure body having partition walls defining a plurality of cells which become through channels for a fluid and extend from a first end face to a second end face, the partition walls are constituted of a porous body having aggregates and a bonding material to bond the aggregates to one another in a state where pores are formed among the aggregates, the aggregates include molten silica particles, the bonding material includes glass, a content ratio of SiO2 in the porous body is 70 mass % or more, and a thermal expansion coefficient of the porous body at 40 to 800° C. is from 1.5 to 6.0×10−6/° C.
