An outboard motor comprises a cowling, having a top cowling and a bottom cowling, that cooperate to define an engine compartment. An intake air duct draws outside air into the engine compartment. A water collecting part is arranged in the bottom cowling for accumulating water that may enter the cowling through the air duct. A water passage may also be provided for guiding water from the intake air duct to the water collecting part. The water passage may have air openings for allowing air to enter the engine compartment independent of the water. A floor of the engine compartment may be adapted to contain water splashing and direct water to a water collecting part.

A lubricating system is disclosed for an engine arranged such that the crankshaft is vertically oriented. The crankshaft rotates within a crankcase chamber defined by the cylinder block and a crankcase cover connected thereto. First crankshaft support members which support half-bearings extend from the cylinder block. Mating half-bearings are supported by second crankshaft support members positioned opposite the first crankshaft support members. A baffle plate is positioned in the crankcase chamber between the crankcase cover and the crankshaft. At least one oil flow passage is defined through the crankcase chamber from a top end to a bottom end of the chamber. In one embodiment, oil is supplied through a main passage in the crankcase cover and a branch passage through each second crankshaft support members for lubricating the bearings.

A number of the embodiments of exhaust systems and oil tank arrangements for four-cycle internal combustion engine powered outboard motors. In all of the embodiments, idle exhaust gases are discharged to the atmosphere through a path that extends above the oil tank. A cooling jacket is formed around an exhaust pipe that depends through a cavity in the oil tank and coolant from this cooling jacket is discharged to the exterior surface of the exhaust pipe so as to cool it. Cooling water from the engine and from the exhaust pipe cooling jacket is isolated from the idle exhaust gas discharge so as to ensure that this cooling water cannot enter the engine through the idle exhaust gas discharge path.

An oil pump for a lubricating system of an outboard motor is disclosed. The motor has a cowling defining an engine compartment, a water propulsion device, and a guide member having an upper surface and a lower surface, the guide member positioned in the cowling and generally dividing the engine compartment into an upper part and a lower part. An engine is positioned in the upper part of the engine compartment within the cowling and has an output shaft arranged to drive the water propulsion device. The lubricating system includes an oil pan positioned below the guide member and an oil passage leading from the pan through the guide member. The oil pump is positioned in the upper part of the engine compartment, but below the engine, and is driven by a lower end of the output shaft of the engine which extends below the engine, the oil pump having an oil inlet in communication with the oil passage through the guide member.

A number of embodiments of outboard motor that are comprised of a power head consisting of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine and a surrounding protective cowling. Each embodiment also includes a drive shaft housing and lower unit, the latter of which contains a propulsion device for propelling an associated watercraft. The engines are mounted within the protective cowling so their crankshafts rotate about vertically extending axes. In each case the crankshaft is coupled to a drive shaft that depends into the drive shaft housing and lower unit for driving the propulsion device. A flywheel is affixed to the upper end of the crankshaft. A first accessory drive is affixed to the crankshaft below the flywheel for driving at least one engine accessory. The engine accessory is mounted at an upper end of the engine and at least in part within the outer peripheral surface of the flywheel in top plan view. Various alternative locations for the components of the engine including specifically an alternator and a starter motor are disclosed.

A drive arrangement for an engine of an outboard motor including a cowling and a water propulsion device is disclosed. The engine is positioned in the cowling and has a body having a top end and a bottom end and defining at least one combustion chamber. The engine has a generally vertically extending crankshaft having a bottom end in driving relation with the water propulsion device and a top end extending above the top end of the body of the engine, the engine including an intake system including an intake passage through which air is provided to each combustion chamber, at least one intake valve for controlling the flow through the intake passage, and an intake camshaft for actuating the intake valve(s). The engine also includes an exhaust system including an exhaust passage leading from each combustion chamber, at least one exhaust valve for controlling the flow of exhaust through the exhaust passage, and an exhaust camshaft for actuating the exhaust valve(s). The drive arrangement includes a flywheel positioned on the crankshaft adjacent the top end of the engine and a camshaft drive pulley positioned on the crankshaft above the flywheel, the camshaft drive pulley driving a first flexible transmitter which drives a driven pulley connected to at least one of the camshafts, the crankshaft further arranged to drive a second flexible transmitter which drives a pulley associated with an engine accessory such as an alternator.

The induction system includes a cover extending over a top end of the engine. The cover defines an air duct leading from an intake chamber defined by the cowling to an intake pipe of the air intake system of the engine. The cover also defines an air duct in communication with the engine compartment and leading to an exhaust chamber defined by the cowling. A pair of intake ports lead through a cover of the cowling from the intake chamber, and an exhaust port leads through the cover from the exhaust chamber. The intake ports are positioned forward of the exhaust port when considering the forward movement of a watercraft which is powered by the motor.

The fuel system includes a fuel supply unit for delivering fuel from a fuel supply to at least one charge former, the charge former arranged to provide fuel to the combustion chamber for combustion therein, the fuel supply unit positioned at the first or second end of the engine.
