Glass fibers for reinforcing thermoplastic resins are sized with an aqueous dispersion comprising a polyurethane-ionomer as a film-forming agent and a bonding agent comprising an epoxy-containing alkoxysilane. Advantageously the polyurethane is a very small particle ionomer and the bonding agent is selected from the group consisting of(a) an epoxyalkyl alkoxysilane+an aminoalkyl alkoxysilane,(b) an epoxyalkyl alkoxysilane+a low-molecular weight aliphatic primary or secondary mono-amine,(c) an aminoalkyl alkoxysilane+a low-molecular weight monoepoxide, and(d) an epoxyalkyl alkoxysilane.

An inorganic-organic plastic having improved strength, elasticity, dimensional stability with increase in temperature and flame resistance and adapted for use in filling cracks and cavities and for making materials useful in the building industry is prepared by (1) premixing (c) an organic compound having at least one reactive hydrogen and at least one ionic group or at least one non-ionic hydrophilic group with (b) an aqueous silicate and then mixing the resulting mixture with (a) an organic polyisocyanate or (2) mixing (a), (b) and (c) simultaneously and reacting the mixture thus obtained to form a colloidal xerosol.

A process is provided for making an inorganic-organic plastic having improved compression strength, elasticity, dimensional stability to heat and flame resistance wherein an organic polyisocyanate is reacted with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate or aqueous silica sol in a mixture containing an organic amphiphilous compound having 1 to 9 carbon atoms, such as an alcohol. The product may be used as a constructional component of a building.

This invention relates to a process for the production of water dispersible polyurethanes by reacting polyisocyanates with sulphonate group containing diols. The sulphonate diols have the general formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN A and B, which may be the same or different, each represents a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms,R represents hydrogen, an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl group,X.sup.(+) represents an alkali metal cation or ammonium group which may be substitutedn and m, which may be the same or different, each represents an integer between 0 and 30 inclusive,o and p, represent 0 or 1, andq represents an integer of 0 or 2.Sufficient amounts of this diol are used to provide the final polymer with a sulphonate group content of about 0.1 to 6 wt.%. In a preferred embodiment, a prepolymer is formed in substance with the sulphonate bearing diol, the polyisocyanate and optionally other reactive hydrogen bearing compounds. The prepolymer is then chain extended with water and water soluble polyamines. This second stage may take place in water and the polyamines may carry sulphonate groups.

The present invention relates to crosslinked polyurethane-polyurea powders which are prepared by a process which comprises dispersing NCO semiprepolymers in an aqueous medium, forming powders and isolating the powders from the aqueous medium, the NCO semiprepolymers having an NCO content of 10 to 20%, being liquid at room temperature and/or dissolved in isocyanate-inert, water-soluble solvents and based on the reaction product of(a) a polyisocyanate component based on at least one organic polyisocyanate with a polyol component having an average hydroxyl functionality of 2.3 to 4.0 and containing(b) a hydrophobic polyol component containing less than 25% by weight of ethylene oxide units, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O--, and(c) a hydrophilic polyether component comprising monohydric or polyhydric alcohols containing at least 70% by weight of structural units corresponding to the formula ##STR1## The present invention also relates to a process for the preparation of these crosslinked polyurethane-polyurea powders and to their use as fillers in two-component polyurethane coating compositions.
