The composition has overall standards of mechanical strength, heat resistance and water resistance.

Disclosed is a setting type resin composition comprising (A) a setting type resin and (B) 10 to 200 parts by weight, per 100 parts by weight of said resin (A), of a substantially linear, high-molecular-weight novolak type substituted phenolic resin which comprises a constituent phenol component comprised mainly of a bifunctional phenol and has a number average molecular weight of at least 1500. This resin composition has highly improved heat resistance and mechanical strength characteristics by virtue of incorporation of the high-molecular-weight novolak type substituted phenolic resin, and this improving effect is especially prominent when an epoxy resin is used as the setting type resin.

A hydrocarbon resin consisting essentially of a copolymer of (A) an unsaturated chain hydrocarbon or a cyclic hydrocarbon having a vinylidene group and (B) 9,10-dihydrodicyclopentadiene or its derivative, or a hydrocarbon resin modified by addition reacting an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or its anhydride, or hydrogen, to the above-mentioned copolymer. The hydrocarbon resin and the modified hydrocarbon resin have a high softening point and a low melt viscosity, and are suitable for use in adhesives and traffic paints.

According to the present invention, a coat is formed by applying a coating composition comprising an epoxy resin obtained by a bisphenol represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and a curing agent, to a substrate; and thereafter contactings the resulting coat with a liquid such as warm water or hot water in a one stage or multistage process. The thus formed coat is excellent in properties such as heat resistance, particularly erosion resistance adhesive properties and resistance to leaching of organic constituents contained in the coat exposed to hot water.

A high-molecular-weight novolak type substituted phenolic resin having a number average molecular weight of at least 1500 is prepared by reacting (A) (i) a phenol comprised mainly of a bifunctional phenol or (ii) a low-molecular-weight novolak type substituted phenolic resin derived from this phenol and an aldehyde with (B) a chain extender selected from the group consisting of (i) a dimethylolated product of a bifunctional or trifunctional phenol, (ii) a low-molecular-weight resol type substituted phenolic resin derived from a phenol comprised mainly of a bifunctional phenol and an aldehyde, (iii) an aldehyde, (iv) a ketone, (v) a diol and (vi) a dihalide in the presence of an acid catalyst, with the proviso that if the reactant (A) is the phenol (i), the chain extender is the resol type substituted phenolic resin (ii).The molecular weight of this novolak type substituted phenolic resin is much higher than the molecular weights of conventional novolak type phenolic resins, and if this phenolic resin is incorporated into various setting type resins, the heat resistance and mechanical properties of these resins can remarkably be improved.

Disclosed are epoxy resin compositions comprising a 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyaryl) lower alkane type epoxy resin, hydroquinone and a reaction catalyst, or a 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyaryl) lower alkane type epoxy resin and N-aminoalkyl-substituted piperazine or a modified product thereof. These epoxy resin compositions as prepared are in a liquid state and hence resin moldings can be manufactured therefrom by such a simple technique as casting. It is also possible to cure these resin compositions at a temperature below 150.degree. C., and the resin moldings obtained therefrom are tough and excellent in impact resistance as well as in heat resistance.
