This invention is directed to a thermoplastic polymer that is solid at room temperature and which expands on further polymerization, to form a crosslinked polymer, and to a process for preparing the polymer and the crosslinked polymer. In a preferred embodiment the polymer is prepared by polymerizing 10-90 but preferably 20-80 mole percent of a lower alkyl acrylic monomer containing a spirobislactone moiety, 10-90 but preferably 20-80 mole percent of a lower alkyl acrylic monomer containing an epoxide moiety, and 0.1-5 but preferably 0.5-1 mole percent of a lower alkyl acrylic monomer containing a functional moiety chosen from primary amino, secondary amino, mercaptan, and hydroxyl groups which can initiate crosslinking with the spirobislactone moiety. The crosslinked polymer is devoid of a spirobislactone carbonyl absorption band and is insoluble in conventional organic solvents.

A coating composition contains an effective amount of between 5 and 70 percent by weight of metalized tubules which are or which encapsulate a composition known to have an antifouling effect or known to possess antimicrobial, herbicidal algaicidal or pesticidal (biocidal) properties. When the coating composition is applied to a surface to be protected, a toxic surface environment is formed. The tubules can be used alone or the tubules can contain in the hollow core a secondary or co-biocidal agent or mixtures of these agents. When desired, the metal coating layer metalizing the tubule can be a non-biocidal metal. In those cases, protection is provided by the biocidal agent carried in the core.

Bislactone curing agents are used to cure and copolymerize with epoxy-basedesins. Preferably, the copolymerization is performed using a tertiary amine catalyst. During cure, the bislactone ring opens and expands. The use of bislactones as curing agents for epoxy-based resins avoids the shrinkage and accompanying stresses which occur when epoxy-based resins are cured conventionally. The novel bislactone cured epoxy-based polymers according the present invention are less prone to failure than are conventional epoxy-based polymers. In a further embodiment, the epoxy is copolymerized with a novel bislactone monomer having at least one trifluoromethyl group. The resulting fluorinated copolymer has a reduced surface energy.

The invention herein pertains to a method for reducing adhesion of marine organisms to a substrate and an article that is a substrate having thereon a solid coating of a fluorinated polyurethane elastomer. The elastomer is tough and has antifouling and release properties in reference to marine organisms. The method includes the steps of providing a liquid mixture of the fluorinated polyurethane elastomer, applying the elastomer mixture to said substrate, and curing the elastomer mixture to a solid coating of the fluorinated polyurethane elastomer, the elastomer having surface energy (which is a function of fluorine content) of 15-30 milli J/m2, Young's modulus of elasticity of 2-15 MPa, and fluorine content of 3-25%.
