A parallel resonant induction cooking surface unit comprises a voltage fed inverter which drives a load circuit, comprised of a main induction drive coil, a tuning capacitor coupled in parallel with the main induction drive coil, and an inductor coupled in series with the main induction drive coil, with a square wave voltage, causing the main induction drive coil to generate a time variant magnetic field resulting in eddy currents being induced in the surface of a metallic, food-containing utensil positioned adjacent to the main induction drive coil, and hence, utensil heating. By tuning the load circuit to resonance at or near the square wave frequency, reactive currents therein are minimized, resulting in improved power factor. Moreover, resultant main induction drive coil voltage and current are nearly sinusoidal, thereby achieving reduced electromagnetic interference radiation at frequencies greater than the square wave frequency.

A backing is disposed on a face of the eddy current array circuit opposite to the active face for concentrating an electromagnetic flux from the eddy current array circuit into the component when each of the plurality of drive elements is being energized. A mechanical arrangement is provided for supporting and deploying the backing and the array circuit to substantially conform with the surface portion under inspection and to cause each of the pluralities of drive and sense elements to be maintained at their respective substantially constant distances from the inspection surface during scanning, preferably at a controlled rate of scan.

In addition to the devices themselves, novel electric circuits are described for the energization as well as the use of such devices as switching elements in electrical systems. This application describes a number of novel advanced piezoelectric ceramic power switching devices which are mounted within protective gastight enclosures that are either evacuated to a high degree of vacuum or filled with an inert gas protective atmosphere. The devices thus constructed are capable of operating over a range of load voltages extending from about 100 volts to 5000 volts or more with corresponding currents of from a few amperes to hundreds of amperes and wherein it is possible to provide a number of such structures in a single common protective gastight enclosure. For certain circuit applications the devices thus constructed have unpoled portions on which are mounted either passive circuit components such as resistors, capacitors and the like or active semiconductor devices all interconnected in circuit relationship with each other and the switching devices by using printed circuit or integrated circuit fabrication techniques. In these devices, stray circuit impedances whether capacitive, inductive or resistive in nature can be reduced to an absolute minimum by appropriated designs. Such complementary circuit components and active semiconductor devices can be, if desired, mounted within the common protective enclosures in close proximity to the piezoceramic switching devices to which they are connected, or alternatively may be mounted exteriorly of the protective enclosures.

A device for sensing pressure at a source thereof comprising a housing with a fluid pressure responsive diaphragm movable therein for defining therewith an expansible chamber for communication with the source of pressure the magnitude of which is to be sensed, and a transducer. The transducer includes a body of magnetoelastic material of generally annular form positioned within the housing and having magnetic properties which vary as a function of the stress to which the body is subjected in response to movement of the diaphragm. Electrical circuitry responds to stress-induced changes in the magnetic properties to produce an electrical signal having a value which is a function of the magnitude of the fluid pressure. The device includes an actuator, which is movable with the diaphragm, for accepting and retaining a sector of the annular body and a cradle generally fixed in relation to the housing for accepting and retaining a diametrically opposite sector of the annular body. An increase in the fluid pressure in the expansible chamber tends to compress the annular body between the actuator and the cradle. A smart pressure switch including logic circuitry and the pressure sensing device, air conditioning systems incorporating such sensing and control devices, and methods of sensing pressure and controlling the operation of air conditioning systems are also described.

Radiant-energy heating and/or cooking apparatus has an infrared-wavelength radiation-producing element, a reflector for concentrating the infrared radiation and a coverplate through which the concentrated radiation is transmitted to a recipient material, e.g. foodstuffs to be cooked. The coverplate has first and second surface members separated from one another by a honeycomb of tubes; the members and tubes are fabricated of an infrared-transmissive material. The resulting honeycomb coverplate has low infrared absorption and great mechanical strength capable of withstanding severe thermal shock.
