The present invention prevents shift shock and reduces time required to execute the complete speed change operation in the case where a second speed change is commanded while a first speed change operation is still in progress. If a down-shift to a first speed stage is commanded during an up-shift operation from the first to the second speed, the hydraulic pressure in the second speed change operation is controlled in accordance with the state of the first speed change operation at the time of generation of the command for the second speed change. For example, if a down-shift to the first speed stage is commanded during the torque phase of an up-shift operation from first to second speeds, namely, before change in the rotational speed of the input shaft has started, only completion control of the down-shift operation is executed. On the other hand, if the down-shift to the first speed stage is commanded during the inertia phase of the up-shift operation, namely, after the speed change has been started, hydraulic control of the down-shift is started with the initial speed change control.

A hydraulic pressure control apparatus for an automatic transmission including a microprocessor-based control unit for controlling hydraulic pressure supplied to hydraulic servos of friction engagement elements. The control apparatus calculates a target hydraulic pressure P.sub.TA for a condition at the start of the inertia phase in accordance with the input torque, and a gradient based on the target hydraulic pressure and a predetermined time t.sub.TA. A first up-sweep of hydraulic pressure is performed by the apparatus with the gradient. A relatively gradual gradient .delta.P.sub.TA is set based on a target rotation change rate for the input rotational speed to provide a predetermined change amount when the hydraulic pressure becomes the target hydraulic pressure P.sub.TA. If arrival at a predetermined released state is decided, the hydraulic servo is fed with a summed oil pressure which is the total of an initial application oil pressure and a release oil pressure, to initiate piston movement and start of engagement of the input clutch, and the oil pressure is thereafter gradually raised from the summed pressure on the basis of a predetermined pressure relationship. If a failure to arrive at the predetermined released state is decided, the oil pressure is gradually raised on the basis of the predetermined pressure relationship from the oil pressure which is fed to the hydraulic servo when a starting operation is detected.

In the hydraulic operator for the band brake, a resilient elastic cushion is provided between a rod abutting one end of the band of the band brake and a piston. Any slippage between the band and drum of the band brake will result in oscillation of the rod. However, the elastic cushion absorbs oscillation of the rod, thereby isolating the piston from that oscillation.

A control system for an automatic transmission in a vehicle powertrain including an engine and a fluid coupling for transmitting the rotation of an engine to the transmission, the transmission having a clutch which is applied responsive to selection of a forward running range and a hydraulic servo for applying the clutch responsive to an oil pressure. The control system includes a control unit for controlling the oil pressure to the hydraulic servo; an input torque detector for detecting the input torque to be inputted to the transmission; and a specific state detector for detecting satisfaction of a set of specific starting conditions including: (1) that the forward running range has been selected, (2) that the vehicle is stopped and (3) that the engine is in an idling state. The control unit sets the oil pressure to the hydraulic servo to correspond to the input torque at the instant of detection of satisfaction the specific starting conditions, and includes: a first pressure-reducer for abruptly reducing the oil pressure of the hydraulic servo to a set oil pressure immediately before the release of the clutch is started; and a second pressure-reducer for gradually reducing the oil pressure of the hydraulic servo, which has been reduced to the set oil pressure by the first pressure-reducer.
