Novel thermoplastic materials can be obtained in which besides the resin formed by polymerizing alkenylaromatic with or without acrylic and vinylic monomers, there is also a branched interpolymer the main carbon atom chain of which has a saturated elastomeric nature, whereas the chains which make up the branch-offs have a plastic character. Side-chains on the saturated rubber, which have the same composition as the non-grafted resin, favors the even dispersion of the rubber in the resin matrix so that the physical and mechanical properties of the resin are considerably improved: an improved resistance to ageing is also achieved. A styrene-acrylonitrile resin grafted on a saturated ethylene-propylene copolymer is but an example. The preparation process is carried out in solution: critical conditions, additives, adjuvants, initiators and promoters are indicated and exemplified. Irradiation with ultraviolet rays may be of help.

A process for preparing hydrocarbonaceous resins from C.sub.5 fractions is disclosed in which the starting hydrocarbonaceous fraction is enriched with cis-piperylene. A catalyst system is also disclosed for the formation of the resins by polymerization and the simplest catalyst is an aluminum halide. In other embodiments, the aluminum halide is used together with a second component such as a hydrocarbyl halide and/or a halide of a metal selected from Sn, Si, B, Ti, Pb, Sb, As and others. Resins having improved physico-chemical properties are obtained.

There is disclosed the coating of a metallic substrate with a cross-linked polymeric film by contacting the substrate with an aqueous composition containing:at least an acrylic or metacrylic compound which can be defined by the general formula: ##STR1## wherein: R is a straight-line or branched aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, either saturated or unsaturated containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, or a cycloaliphatic or an aromatic group;R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, equal to or different from one another, are straight-line or branched alkyl groups, either saturated or unsaturated and containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or cycloaliphatic or aromatic groups;at least one unsaturated organic acid capable of being copolymerized with the compound (I), in an amount of from 5 to 40 parts by weight per 100 parts of the compound (I) or an organic or a mineral acid which cannot be copolymerized with the compound (I) in an amount of from 1 to 10 parts by weight per 100 parts of the compound (I), anda polymerization catalyst preferably selected from among the persulphates, the hydroperoxides, the peracids H.sub.2 O.sub.2 and the peroxides.A metallic substrate coated by the composition of polymeric nature as described above is then heated to a temperature equal to, or lower than 180.degree. A class of soluble polymers of high molecular weight is disclosed whose members are: copolymers of polycyclic polyenes containing two conjugated double bonds which are members of the group consisting of a) polycyclic polyenes having an endomethylenic system orthocondensed with another hydrocarbon ring wherein the two common carbon atoms form a part of a conjugated diene system whose double bonds are located inside the non-endomethylenic ring, b) polyenes presenting an alkylidene group conjugated with a double bond of a ring which forms a part of an endocyclic system, and c) orthocondensed polycyclic polyenes substituted with an alkylidene type ring whose double bond is conjugated with a double bond of one of the cycles; and homopolymers of at least one of said polycyclic polyenes with at least one other conjugated diene. They may be prepared by reacting the selected monomers in the presence of a cationic catalyst selected from the halides of metals of the second to eighth groups of the periodic system and the alkyl derivatives thereof, which may be complexed with water, alcohols, acids, ethers or alkylhalides.
