A photoreceptor for electrophotography including an electrically conductive substrate, a bottom layer, a photoconductive layer composed mainly of amorphous silicon, and a surface layer, in that order. Both the bottom and surface layers have a greater optical bandgap than said photoconductive layer. A first middle layer is disposed between said bottom layer and said photoconductive layer, and a second middle layer is disposed between said photoconductive layer and said surface layer. Both the first and second middle layers are composed mainly of amorphous silicon and have a concentration of doped atoms which varies from the bottom to the top of the layer.

A plasma CVD (chemical vapor deposition) apparatus of the capacitance coupling type for effecting the chemical vapor deposition on a drum which includes an air tight chamber made of an electrically conductive material, a support provided in the chamber for supporting the drum inside the chamber in an electrically insulated relationship with the chamber, and an RF power source for supplying RF power to the drum. The chamber is grounded and, therefore, the plasma is generated between the drum and inside wall of the chamber. The apparatus is provided with means for providing a smooth surface on the drum. The drum can be used as a photoreceptor for use in an electrophotographic copying machine.

When a photosensitive layer having a thickness of 30 μm is formed by applying the photosensitive resin composition onto a base and removing the solvent by heating, and thus-obtained photosensitive layer is irradiated with an active ray of 1000 mJ/cm2 or less, the dissolution rate of the portion irradiated with the active ray in the photosensitive layer made of the photosensitive resin composition is not less than 0.22 μm/sec and the film residual rate of the portion not irradiated with the active ray is not less than 90%.

An image forming apparatus includes: an image support medium; a charging member for charging the surface of the image support medium in contact with the surface of it; an exposure device for irradiating with light the surface of the image support medium charged by the charging member to form a static latent image; a developing device for supplying developer to the static latent image formed on the image support medium to develop the latent image and for removing the leftover developer on the image support medium; a transfer device for transferring the developer image, which has been developed on the image support medium by the developing device, to a member to be transferred; and a scraping member for scraping foreign matter such as dust and paper particles on the image support medium. The image forming apparatus is constructed such that the charging member causes the developer to adhere to the scraped foreign matter, and then the foreign matter is collected by the developing device through the image support medium. The scraping member is held by a holder which has an opening for allowing the foreign matter to pass through into the charging member housing.
