    摘要: Hydroxy-functional polyethers having a "cardo" diphenylene group in their backbones are prepared by contacting at least one dinucleophilic monomer with at least one dtglycidyl ether of a cardo bisphenol, such as bis(hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, phenolphthalein, or phenolphthalimidine or a substituted cardo bisphenol, such as a substituted bis(hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, a substituted phenolphthalein or a substituted phenolphthalimidine, under conditions sufficient to cause the nucleophillo moieties of the dinucleophilic monomer to react with epoxy moieties to form a polymer backbone containing pendant hydroxy moieties and ether, imino, amino, sulfonamido or ester linkages. These polyethers possess a combination of high barrier to oxygen transmission (i.e., oxygen transmission rate less than 10.0 cm.sup.3 -mil/100 in.sup.2 -atm-day to oxygen) and high heat resistance (i.e., Tg above 120.degree. C.). These polyethers are suitable for use in the manufacture of retort-sterilizable packaging materials exhibiting high barrier to oxygen.

    摘要: Azole rings, such as oxazole and thiazole rings, can activate an aromatic ring bonded to a leaving group such as a halogen atom so that the aromatic ring will undergo aromatic nucleophilic substitution. The reaction is useful for making ethers, thioethers and amines containing azole rings. In particular, monomers having azole rings, activated aromatic rings with leaving groups and nucleophilic moieties can react under conditions of aromatic nucleophilic displacement to form non-rigid rob PBZ polymers. The non-rigid rod PBZ polymers can be used to form molecular composites with rigid rod PBZ polymers which molecular composites are not substantially phase separated.

    摘要: A process for the preparation of bishydroxy aromatic compounds, such as 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, involving contacting a ketone, such as fluorenone, with phenol or substituted phenol in the presence of a mercaptan cocatalyst and a solid superacid catalyst of Hammett acid strength H.sub.0 greater than about -13.0. Solid superacid catalysts include the sulfates, sulfated oxides, sulfated oxyhydroxides, and sulfated oxysilicates of aluminum, tin, and the Group IVA metals, such as zirconium, as well as mixed metal oxides, such as tungsten-zirconium oxides. Isolated yields are high for 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene.
