Abstract: A millimeter-scale Bluetooth low energy wireless transmitter is presented with a dual purpose loop antenna. The oscillator employs a high quality factor resonator formed by a printed 3.5×3.5 mm2 inductive loop antenna (simulated Q˜110) and an on-chip digitally-switched capacitor array (simulated Q˜283). The oscillator replaces the traditional voltage controlled oscillator plus power amplifier, achieving lower power consumption while maintaining phase noise of −118.5 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset that results in low FSK modulation error (2.1%) and low frequency drift during BLE packet transmission.

Abstract: A quadrature fully integrated tri-band GPS receiver implemented in 65 nm CMOS. The analog front-end (AFE) is specifically designed for a miniaturized low-power GPS logger that leverages heavy duty-cycling. The main contribution of the RF front-end is comprised of two main signal paths which support the single-band only mode and the tri-band mode (L1, L2, L5). In the tri-band mode, the AFE is able to fold three GPS signals into a single low intermediate frequency channel in part due to the orthogonality of the pseudo-ransom codes. In active mode, the radio draws 12.1 mW in the single-band (L1) mode with a LNA and an active mixer, and 8.2 mW in the tri-band mode with a passive front-end, from a 1.2 V supply, and with a startup time of 20 us.

Abstract: A Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) transmitter is presented for used in ultra-low-power radios in short range IoT applications. The power consumption of state-of-the-art BLE transmitter has been limited by the relatively power-hungry local oscillator due to the use of LC oscillators for superior phase noise performance. This disclosure addresses this issue by analyzing the phase noise limit of a BLE TX and proposes a ring oscillator-based solution for power and cost savings. The proposed transmitter features: 1) a wideband all-digital phase locked loop (ADPLL) featuring an fRF/4 RO, with an embedded 5-bit TDC; 2) a 4× frequency edge combiner to generate the 2.4 GHz signal; and 3) a switch-capacitor digital PA optimized for high efficiency at low transmit power levels. These not only help reduce the power consumption and improve phase noise performance, but also enhance the transmitter efficiency for short range applications.

Abstract: A programmable clock generator is provided which is particularly suitable for low power applications. The programmable clock generator is comprised of: an oscillator circuit that generates an output signal whose frequency is set by a control signal, two feedback loops for controlling output frequency and a loop select that selects which feedback loop is operational at a given time. In operation, the frequency loop operates to coarsely adjust the frequency of the output signal; whereas, the phase loop operates to finely adjust the frequency of the output signal. The clock generator is preferably implemented by transistors operating in or near the subthreshold region.

The first wireless communications circuit has a net radio frequency (RF) power gain no more than unity before at least one of downconversion of the RF signal or detection of the RF signal. The second wireless communications circuit is operatively coupled to the power supply circuit and the power management circuit.

Abstract: A digital quadrature architecture is presented that employs switched current digital power amplifiers and uses a digital class-B input code profile in combination with non-overlapping LO signals to overcome the low efficiency problems of conventional quadrature architectures. By employing digital class-B signals, the number of I/Q cells is reduced to half and the need for extra processing of the sign bits is eliminated in the transmitters, thereby improving the efficiency.

Abstract: A low power radio is provided with automatic interference rejection. The radio is comprised generally of: an antenna, a rectifier, a comparator, and a correlator. The comparator receives an input signal from the rectifier, compares the input signal to a reference signal and outputs a digital signal. The correlator in turn receives the digital signal from the comparator, correlates the digital signal to a wake-up code and outputs a wake-up signal having a high value when the digital signal is highly correlated with the wake-up code. The radio further includes an automatic threshold controller which adjusts sensitivity of the comparator. Of note, the rectifier, the comparator, the correlator and the automatic threshold controller are comprised in part by circuits having transistors operating only in subthreshold region.

Abstract: A wake-up function is provided for a low power radio. The radio includes: an antenna, a rectifier, and a comparator. The rectifier is configured to receive an RF signal from the antenna and generates an output having a magnitude that decreases in the presence of the RF signal. The comparator compares the output from the rectifier to a reference signal and outputs an activation signal for another radio component. In response the activation signal, the radio component will transition from a low power consumption mode to a higher power consumption mode. In this way, the rectifier and comparator cooperatively operate to perform a wake-up function in the presence of an RF signal.
