A two-stroke engine is disclosed which is controlled by a carburetor throttle valve and has a crankcase subjected to continuously alternating overpressure and underpressure. A pneumatic control member responsive to a signal dependent on the rotational speed of the engine is in pressure communication with the inner chamber of the crankcase via a valve. The output member of the pneumatic control member is connected with the throttle flap of the carburetor. The valve provided between the crankcase and the pneumatic control member is responsive to a signal for controlling the pressure in the pneumatic control member. This valve can be configured as a resonance control valve fixedly mounted to the housing of the engine. The resonance control valve has a mass oscillator which, at a correspondingly high engine speed and as a result of the vibration frequency associated therewith, acts upon a sealing diaphragm in the resonance control valve to open a pass-through opening communicating with the pneumatic control member.

The invention is directed to a braking arrangement for a chain saw having a housing and a guide bar mounted on the housing for accommodating a saw chain thereon. The brake arrangement includes a brake drum operatively connected to the saw chain with a brake band disposed in surrounding relationship thereto. A brake member is connected to the brake band and moves between a ready position whereat the brake band is disposed in spaced relationship to the brake drum and a released position whereat the brake band is drawn tightly around the brake drum. A brake spring resiliently biases the brake member to cause the brake member to pull the brake band tightly about the brake drum when in the released position. A latch arrangement holds the brake member in the ready position against the force of the brake spring. A cam connected to the drive motor rotates through a predetermined path. A release device opens the latch arrangement to permit rotational movement of the brake member to the released position and releases a tensioning member for movement into the path of the cam when the brake member is in the second position whereat the tensioning member follows the cam in a movement that causes the tensioning member to again coact with the latch arrangement to return the brake member to the ready position and to reclose the latch arrangement whereby the latter again holds the brake member in the ready position against the force of the brake spring.

The invention is directed to an ignition arrangement for an internal combustion engine of a handheld portable tool such as a chain saw or the like. The engine has a crankshaft and a fan wheel is seated on the crankshaft for rotation therewith. The ignition arrangement includes a permanent magnet. The magnet has two pole shoes and an exciter coil is mounted on the permanent magnet. The permanent magnet equipped in this way is fixedly mounted on the tool to save weight. A relatively light self-supporting annular member with projections is mounted in the fan wheel. The projections of the annular member and the permanent magnet with its pole shoes conjointly define a magnetic circuit. As the projections pass the pole shoes at a minimal spacing therefrom during operation of the engine, the projections alternately open and close the magnetic circuit thereby causing changes in the flux of this circuit. The flux changes cause a voltage to be inducted in the exciter coil which serves to generate the igniting spark via an appropriate electronic circuit.

An automatic starting arrangement for a hand-started internal combustion engine is disclosed. Internal combustion engines of this type have a choke flap and a throttle flap positioned one behind the other in the air-intake channel. In order to ensure a reliable starting of the engine independently of manual positioning activities, the invention provides that in the start position the choke flap is coupled with the throttle flap in a position-dependent manner and the choke flap holds the throttle flap in a position between the full-throttle position and the idle position. The choke flap is brought into an at-rest position via an actuating device which is actuable in dependence upon the operating condition of the engine. The choke flap is decoupled from the throttle flap in the at-rest position.

The bottom has a combustion air outlet. A combustion air channel is connected to the combustion air outlet and to the air filter. The combustion air outlet is axially supplying combustion air from the chamber through the combustion air channel into the air filter of internal combustion engine. The fan housing has a channel wall having a bottom portion connected to the face of the bottom remote from the fan wheel and covering the bottom partially to form a double-walled bottom. The end face portion of the combustion air channel is defined by the bottom and the bottom portion of the channel wall. In an alternative embodiment the combustion air channel is provided in a hollow beam of a support that supports the drive unit of the working tool.

The invention is directed to a tensioning arrangement for saw chains of motor-driven chain saws which include a device for longitudinally displacing the guide bar. The clamped guide bar is released so that the adjusting arrangement can be actuated for the longitudinal displacement of the guide bar. By rotating a disc having a spiral slot, a slide piece, which is coupled to the guide bar, is displaced in the longitudinal direction. Assembly is simplified and handling facilitated when the tension in the saw chain is adjusted. This is achieved by making the slide piece on the spiral disc so that it is not released therefrom but instead is held so as to be rotationally and longitudinally displaceable. The slide piece is fixedly connected to the guide bar by using appropriate attachment devices.

The invention is directed to a tensioning arrangement for a saw chain of a motor-driven chain saw. The saw chain runs on a guide bar mounted on the motor housing of the chain saw. The tensioning arrangement includes a rotatable disc having a spirally-shaped guide slot in which a lug of a slide piece engages. The longitudinal displacement of the guide bar is provided by rotating the disc. The guide slot in the disc extends over a rotational angle of at least 270.degree.. A still lesser slope of the guide slot is provided with a rotational angle in the range of 360.degree. to 450.degree.. The tensioning arrangement is especially suitable for adjusting the guide bar in motor-driven chain saws thereby adjusting the tension in the saw chain.
