The plastics precursors are based on isocyanate-terminated prepolymers which have been hydrophilically modified with ionic groups and/or ethylene oxide units and which contain specified amounts of isocyanate groups and --NH-- groups.The present invention also relates to processes for preparing aqueous dispersions from the solid plastics precursors and to using the plastics precursors for cross-linking dispersed plastics containing isocyanate-reactive groups.

A process is provided for preparing storage stable, aqueous dispersions of oligourethanes or polyurethanes in admixture with auxiliary agents and additives which are not soluble nor dispersible in water. The oligourethanes or polyurethanes are rendered dispersible in water by incorporating ionic and/or non-ionic hydrophilic groups. In order that the final product remains storage stable, the auxiliary agents or additives are added to the oligourethanes or polyurethanes before they are dispersed in water.

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of aqueous dispersions or solutions of polyurethanes which have urea end groups and contain non-ionic hydrophilic segments and which are capable of being cross-linked with the aid of cross-linking agents which are reactive with urea groups, characterized in that prepolymers which have isocyanurate end groups and which(i) have an average molecular weight of less than about 15,000 and(ii) contain from about 2 to 30%, by weight, of ethylene oxide units corresponding to the following formula:--CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O-- within a polyether chain (containing ethylene oxide units)are reacted at from about 10.degree. to 70.degree. C. with an aqueous solution of ammonia or with a primary amine, optionally dissolved in water, the aqueous solution of ammonia or the primary amine, optionally dissolved in water, being added to the prepolymer in the reaction vessel and the quantity of water used for dissolving the ammonia or primary amine being not more than about 10%, by weight, based on the total quantity of reaction mixture, and finally, after termination of the addition reaction between the free isocyanate groups of the prepolymer and the added ammonia or primary amine, the reaction product obtained is stirred with water at from about 10.degree. to 70.degree. C. to form an aqueous dispersion or solution having a concentration of from about 5 to 65%, by weight. The present invention also relates to the use of dispersions or solutions obtainable by the process according to the present invention for the production of cross-linked sheets by application of the dispersion to a substrate and drying, cross-linking of the sheet being ensured by the addition of a cross-linking agent capable of undergoing a cross-linking reaction with the urea groups either before, during or after application of the solution or dispersion to the substrate.

A process for preparing modified aqueous synthetic resin dispersions, comprising introducing organic diisocyanates which are liquid at room temperature into polyurethane-containing, non-sedimenting, aqueous synthetic resin dispersions, optionally in the presence of catalysts which accelerate the isocyanate polyaddition reaction and/or the dimerization of isocyanate groups and/or the carbodiimidization of isocyanate groups and/or the trimerization of isocyanate groups, mixing the organic diisocyanate with the aqueous dispersion at a temperature at which no visible foaming occurs, maintaining the temperature after addition of all the diisocyanate until at least 50% of the isocyanate groups in the added diisocyanate have undergone reaction and, if desired, completing the reaction by subsequently heating to temperatures up to 100.degree. C.These modified aqueous dispersions contain dispersed latex particles which are enveloped with polyurea formed from the diisocyanates. These modified dispersions are useful as water-resistant surface coatings and leather dressings which are abrasion resistant in the wet.

This invention relates to a process for the production of water dispersible polyurethanes by reacting polyisocyanates with sulphonate group containing diols. The sulphonate diols have the general formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN A and B, which may be the same or different, each represents a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms,R represents hydrogen, an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl group,X.sup.(+) represents an alkali metal cation or ammonium group which may be substitutedn and m, which may be the same or different, each represents an integer between 0 and 30 inclusive,o and p, represent 0 or 1, andq represents an integer of 0 or 2.Sufficient amounts of this diol are used to provide the final polymer with a sulphonate group content of about 0.1 to 6 wt.%. In a preferred embodiment, a prepolymer is formed in substance with the sulphonate bearing diol, the polyisocyanate and optionally other reactive hydrogen bearing compounds. The prepolymer is then chain extended with water and water soluble polyamines. This second stage may take place in water and the polyamines may carry sulphonate groups.

Diisocyanates corresponding to the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 (an isocyanate-containing radical) are as defined herein are made by several processes. These diisocyanates may be made by phosgenating the diamine in which the diisocyanate is based. They may also be produced by treating the bis-urethane of the tertiary alcohol corresponding to the diisocyanate with phosgene. Such diisocyanates may also be made by treating a specific type of bis-urea with hydrogen chloride. The diisocyanates corresponding to the above-given formula are particularly useful in the production of polyurethanes having good flame-proof and mechanical properties.

The present invention is directed to a process for the production of plastics based on an isocyanate-polyaddition product by(1) forming an isocyanate group-containing prepolymer from(a) a compound which has a molecular weight of from 146 to about 10,000, is substantially free from hydroxyl groups, contains at least two terminal carboxyl groups and optionally contains ether and/or ester groups,(b) excess quantities of an organic nonaromatic polyisocyanate which has at least one cyclohexane ring and exclusively contains aliphatically- and/or cycloaliphatically-bound isocyanate groups and(c) up to 10 equivalent percent, based on the isocyanate-reactive groups in component (a), of a compound which is monofunctional for the purposes of the isocyanate-addition reaction and,(2) reacting the product of step (1) with(d) a chain-lengthening agent such as water, a polyamine containing at least two primary and/or secondary amino groups or hydrazine or a derivative thereof containing at least two primary and/or secondary amino groups.
