A catalytic process for the dimerization of norbornene and/or norbornadiene using a reduced valence state Group VIB metal oxide as the catalyst, preferably Cr(II) on a porous support such as silica. The product norbornene dimer or norbornadiene dimer is obtained in high yield and high stereospecificity at greater than 90 weight percent of the exo-trans-exo stereoisomer. The norbornene dimer is useful as a high energy density fuel. The norbornadiene dimer can be further functionalized to yield novel chemical intermediates or polymerized or copolymerized with other olefins. The norbornadiene dimer can also be hydrogenated for high energy fuel applications.

Novel homopolymer and copolymer compositions produced from the polymerization of non-conjugated dienes have been discovered. The novel compositions are produced by an equally novel process comprising cyclopolymerization of non-conjugated dienes employing reduced valence state Group VIB metal oxide catalyst on porous support. The preferred catalyst comprises carbon monoxide reduced chromium on silica. Copolymers are formed by copolymerization of non-conjugated dienes with 1-alkenes in contact with the activated chromium on silica catalyst. The compositions are useful as lubricants and additives.

The acidic solid may comprise a Group IVB metal oxide, such as zirconia, modified with an oxyanion of a Group VIB metal, such as tungsten. The oligomers produced by this process may be hydrogenated to produce thermally stable lubricants and lubricant additives.

The oligomer is also useful in modifying wax crystal formation at low temperature when added to distillate fuels. The oligomer is a near linear copolymer of a mixture of ethylene and C.sub.3 -C.sub.28 1-alkenes, or only 1-alkenes, wherein a large proportion of the pendant alkyl groups of the recurring 1-alkene monomer units contain between 14 and 22 carbon atoms. The oligomer is produced by polymerization of mixed 1-alkenes with reduced chromium oxide catalyst on silica support.

The compositions comprise the homopolymer or copolymer product of the oligomerization of C.sub.3 to C.sub.5 alpha-olefin or mixtures thereof, with or without ethylene as co-monomer. The process is carried out under oligomerization conditions in contact with a reduced valence state Group VIB metal catalyst on porous support. The viscosity index improver of the invention has a regio-irregularity of at least 20%, weight average molecular weight between 6,000 and 30,000 and molecular weight distribution between 2 and 5.

A novel composition is disclosed that is particularly useful as a lubricant viscosity index improver. The composition comprises branched C.sub.30 -C.sub.10000 hydrocarbons that have a branch ratio of less than 0.19 and viscosity at 100.degree. C. between 725 cS and 15,000 cS. The novel compositions comprise the product of the oligomerization of C.sub.6 to C.sub.20 alpha-olefin feedstock, or mixtures thereof, under oligomerization conditions at a temperature between -20.degree. C. and +90.degree. C. in contact with a reduced valence state Group VIB metal catalyst on porous support. The compositions have viscosities at 100.degree. C. between 725 cS and 15,000 cS. Using the foregoing compositions in admixture with mineral oil and synthetic lubricants provides novel lubricant blends that show an elevated viscosity index. The mixtures also show an increased stability to shear stress at high temperture with all blends notable by exhibiting Newtonian flow.

This invention is directed to a lubricant composition that is comprised of a continuous phase and a discontinuous phase, i.e., a two phase lubricant composition. The continuous phase and the discontinuous phase of the lubricant of this invention are oil or oil type compositions that are essentially insoluble in one another. The lubricant composition is comprised of a continuous phase base oil that is comprised of a low viscosity Group II, III, IV or GTL base stock or a blend of at least two of the Group II, III, IV and GTL base stocks, optionally including a low viscosity Group V base stock, with the continuous phase base oil having, independently, a viscosity of from 1 to 100 cSt at 100° C. The lubricant composition is further comprised of a discontinuous phase that is comprised of an ester composition having a mean average droplet size of from 0.01 microns to 20 microns, in which the ester composition is comprised of an ester compound having no ether linkages.
