摘要: An optical preform is prepared first by depositing soot about a glass subate rod (22) to form a boule. Then the soot boule is sintered to consolidate the material and provide a preform from which optical fiber is drawn. The boule is relatively large so that the resulting preform is capable of providing more optical fiber than those used in the past. In order to be able to sinter successfully the enlarged boule, microwave energy from a furnace (60) is coupled to the glass rod so that the sintering proceeds from the rod radially outwardly thereby allowing gases readily to escape and rendering the process highly efficient.

摘要: A terminal block (20) includes a plurality of wells each having a protector32) disposed therein and each having a bore which communicates with a U-shaped terminal (60) so that a portion of the protector extends through the bore into engagement with a bade (66) of the terminal. Tangs (68--68) of each terminal depend downwardly. Also, the terminal block includes a plurality of terminal posts (62--62) each having a spade (69) depending therefrom. A first plastic material (70) encapsulates the base and innermost portions of each U-shaped terminal and post. Individual conductors of a pair in a cable (50) extend to a depending tang of a terminal and to a tang of an associated terminal. A strap wire interconnects the other depending tang of each U-shaped terminal to a spade of an associated terminal post. A second plastic material encapsulates the wiring and the outermost portions of the U-shaped terminals and of the spades of the terminal posts. In making this terminal block, the use of a two step plastic encapsulation process allows the terminals and terminal posts to be held in position with wiring exposed during electrical tests. If the test results are acceptable, the remaining portions of the U-shaped terminals and terminal posts are encapsulated with the second plastic material. If the test results are not acceptable, defects are corrected and then the other portions are encapsulated with the second plastic material.

摘要: Methods of and apparatus for winding strand such as optical fibers on altate spools and for storing and protecting from damage coiled end portions of the strand to be wound on the spools in which the coils are clamped laterally of the coils with forces applied parallel to the axis of the coils. The methods and apparatus of the invention may be used for urging portions of the strand being fed to the spools and associated strand storage and clamping devices against the peripheral surfaces thereof to aid in the transfer of the distribution of the strand from one spool to the other spool.

摘要: A communications cable comprising a core of at least one transmission media and a plastic jacket includes provisions for preventing the movement of water within the cable. A water blockable yarn (33) or strip (35) is interposed between the core and the jacket (32) and extends either linearly along the cable or is wrapped helically about a portion of the sheath system. In any plane along the cable which is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the cable, the yarn or the strip extends about an insubstantial portion of an inner periphery of the cable. As a result, any desired bond between the jacket and an underlying element of the cable sheath system is discontinuous for only an insignificant portion of the peripheral surface of contact. The yarn may be one which has been treated with a superabsorbent material whereas the strip may comprise a substrate strip which has been impregnated with a superabsorbent material which upon contact with water swells and inhibits the movement of water within the cable.

摘要: The present invention is directed to a method for soldering each of a plurality of members (40), arranged in one or more parallel rows, to a separate one of a plurality of metallized pads (42) on a substrate (10), each pad being contiguous with a corresponding member. The method is initiated by tilting the substrate so that one end of each row of members and the metallized pads contiguous therewith are at a higher elevation than the other end. A stream (80) of molten solder and a dripping stream (88) of flux droplets are directed onto the substrate into the regions where the members are contiguous with the metallized pads. Simultaneously, the substrate is displaced relative to the streams along a path (96) inclined with respect to the horizontal and parallel to the rows of members so that the members and the metallized pads are successively coated with solder and then flux. The inclination of the substrate is such that the solder and flux flow downwardly, under gravity, past a successive one of the members and metallized pads. The force of gravity on the solder, together with the presence of the flux, is sufficient to break the surface tension of the solder between adjacent members to prevent a solder bridge therebetween.

摘要: A four surface point type drill has its primary clearance faces configured so that their circumferential width decreases as the longitudinal axis of the drill is approached. The trailing edge and cutting edge of the primary clearance face surfaces substantially intersect each other at a point where they both intersect the opposite ends of the chisel edge of the drill point. The chisel edge itself is totally defined by a line formed by the intersection of the two secondary clearance face surfaces of the drill point. This new improved drill point geometry permits the use of reduced primary and secondary clearance face relief angles at the drill point which improves the structural integrity of the cutting edge of the drill and hence reduces chipping at the cutting edge.

摘要: An extrusion apparatus for providing a plastic jacket (32) about an advang cable core (23) which has been wrapped with a laminated metallic foil (76) includes dual core tubes. An inner one (86) of the core tubes extends into an extrusion chamber and has a free end portion (89) spaced from and disposed concentrically within an end portion (94) of an outer core tube (93). The foil, which is relatively cool and which functions as a shield (26), engages an inner wall of the inner core tube. This causes an overlapped longitudinal seam (78) of the shield to be maintained during the passage of the shielded cable core through the inner core tube. As a result, molten plastic material which is to form the jacket (32) is isolated thermally from the relatively cool shield and is prevented from being cooled prematurely prior to its being tubed about the advancing cable core.
