    摘要: A system (10) for operating a multiplicity of credit card reader-equipped cellular mobile radiotelephones (CMRs 12) as credit card paystations is disclosed. The CMRs (12) incorporate a remotely programmable unit (RPU 48) which controls credit card operation (1400, 1700) and which controls data communication sessions (188, 1900, 2100) with a credit card (CC) host (26) and a remote programming (RP) host (24). The RPU (48) resides between a conventional control unit (CU 42) and a conventional transmit/receive unit (TRU 62) of a conventional CMR. The RPU (48) monitors messages (1200, 1300) transmitted from the CU (42) and from the TRU (62). The CMR (12) powers up in a locked state (1402), within which a credit card (88) may be read. The credit card is locally validated (1421) at CMR 12. If the validation is successful, the CMR (12) is unlocked so that a call may be placed. Credit card information, called number, call time, call duration, and system identification number (SID) are recorded (1700) in a call record for each call established through the CMR (12). Call records are accumulated within the CMR (12). After each call, accumulated CMR (12) usage is checked (1730) against fraud alert thresholds. When a threshold is exceeded, an external credit card validation is performed (1744). Upon a daily schedule which activates during off-peak hours, the CMR (12) calls the CC host (26) to upload (1830) the accumulated call records.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for an authorized user of a cellular mobile radiotelephone to easily obtain data and performance evaluation of the telephone, such as the electronic serial number (ESN), the mobile telephone number (MID), and transmitted audio information that permits evaluation of the voice modulation performance of the telephone. By calling a dedicated telephone number, an authorized operator, such as a cellular agent, can contact a computer with voice response capability, which is associated with the electronic mobile exchange (cellular switch). The computer then transmits to the agent a voice prompt requesting a password. Upon correct entry of the password, the computer initiates a trunk trace of the incoming call. The trunk trace identifies the ESN and MID for the telephone used to make the call. The computer reports that data to the calling party, via the cellular network. Having supplied the telephone user or agent with the data, the computer then prompts the agent to record a voice sample on the system for subsequent re-transmittal to the telephne. By evaluating the re-transmitted voice sample, the agent can evaluate the voice modulation capability of the telephone.

When channels are assigned to cells (14), a figure of merit which predicts potential voice quality, such as C/I, is determined (34) for each channel/cell assignment. The assigned channels and associated figures of merit are distributed to corresponding land stations (14) to make channel-to-cell assignments. When a call arises in a cell (14) a channel is selected for assignment to the call. The channel is selected from channels assigned during the channel-to-cell assignment phase. A channel assignment algorithm (68) ensures that potentially lower quality channels (20) are the least used channels at the cell (14). When potentially lower quality channels (20) are assigned to calls, the calls are handed off to potentially higher quality channels (18) as soon as potentially higher quality channels (18) become available.

    摘要: A radiotelephone (10) simulates the call origination process performed by land-line telephones. Dial tone is generated (78) in response to an off-hook condition and removed when a first digit (54) is dialed. A timer process (84, 110) and a number analysis process (100) simultaneously evaluate dialed digits to detect the completion of dialing. The number analysis process (100) identifies seven, ten, and eleven digit, and indeterminate length phone number formats (64, 66, 52, 68). The ten digit format is recognized in response to remotely programmed (42) connected NPA codes. For most calls, the number analysis process (100) instantly detects a phone number's final digit (62). In a few cases the timer process (84, 110) detects the final digit through the absence of dialing activity for a predetermined duration. When the final digit (62) is detected, an origination message is transmitted to a cellular network.

The cordless base station (22) makes an active channel list (62) based upon the dormant channel list (70). Cordless operation messages transmitted from either a handset (18) or cordless base station (22) use a channel selected from the active channel list (62).

A method of communicating data packets bidirectionally between two mobile end systems or between a mobile end system and a fixed end system through a communications network includes the steps of assigning unique identity codes to each mobile end system and to an interface device and a data witch for each mobile end system, setting up communication channels between the end systems, identifying the routing scheme to be used for the packet transmission, and establishing bidirectional communications between the end systems.

    摘要: A multiple mode, personal, wireless communications system exists within a radiotelephone network serving general customers and provides additional services to a select group of customers. The system uses handsets (32) which automatically switch between a standard cellular radiotelephone mode of operation (1901) and an enhanced cordless mode (1420) when the handsets (32) are within range of pico cells (26) that are interconnected to the public switched telephone network (20). Each pico cell is controlled via a framework of overlay cells (10b) that operates independently of the radiotelephone network and uses a unique control protocol on a small number of reserved cellular channels. Each pico cell consists of a spectrally dynamic, non-capturing, frequency agile, multi-purpose base station (26) provided at customer-selected locations to cooperate with the overlay cell framework. Each pico cell is capable of supporting multiple handsets (32) and uses low power operation that achieves limited coverage. Each pico cell reduces traffic on the standard cellular radiotelephone network by independently handling registered handsets (32). An alternate line option module (22) provides wireless local interconnect capability to selectively route call traffic between land lines (24) and the standard cellular radiotelephone network. Service control units (12) and host stations (17) facilitate wireless activation and control of each pico cell and handset (32) via the overlay cell framework.
