摘要: Test compositions and test devices are provided which are capable of generating different hues at different analyte concentrations. Visual results for clinically important analytes, such as glucose and cholesterol, are provided by use of compositions containing two independent catalytic systems which are reactive with a common substrate generated from the analyte of interest, to produce visual endpoints of different hues for different concentrations of analyte. Preferred formulations provide a RAINBOW of hues, the particular final hue produced depending on the concentration of the analyte.

摘要: A generally flat, elongated edge-sealed polymeric blood bag having a length to width ratio of at least 2 to 1 and one end portion in tapering communication with a connected tubing. When the bag is filled with a mixture of blood components which are then separated, the tapering end portion expands to form a funnel-like guide for directing a separated component from the bag through the tubing in a substantially unobstructed manner. Bag is especially useful for separating and isolating the components of a neocyte/gerocyte red blood cell mixture.

摘要: Disclosed is a method of growing a mixture of two or more species of lactic acid producing bacteria whose growth rates are differently affected by the pH of the nutrient growth medium. The method involves maintaining the pH of the medium at a low level which actively selects for the growth of one species until that species has reached the desired concentration. The pH is then raised to a level that actively selects for the growth of another species and maintained at this level until that species has reached the desired concentration. The method is especially useful for preparing a starter culture for Italian type cheese containing a mixture of coccus and rod bacteria because the ratio of these bacteria, one to the other, can be closely controlled.

摘要: Double-protected needle assembly comprising a needle-handle portion and a needle-protecting portion. The needle-handle portion includes a bevel-tipped needle attached to and extending from it into the needle-protector portion. The needle protecting portion comprises a rigid, tamper proof member completely enclosing the needle and attached to the needle-handle portion at a resilient tear seal member adapted to break when a twisting force is applied to either the handle portion or the protecting member. The tear seal is adapted to remove liquid from the surface of the needle when the protector is withdrawn to expose the needle. Within the protector, but not attached thereto, is a relatively soft inner tubular enclosure completely enclosing the needle extending beyond its bevel tip and adapted to prevent contact of the bevel tip with any portion of the rigid protector during assembly or when the protector is removed. The inner tubular enclosure is retained loosely within the protector by the tear seal member which is bonded to the rigid protector during steam sterilization.

摘要: This invention contemplates a novel process for the preparation of solution stable alpha-amylase obtained from Bacillus licheniformis, and to the high potency liquid enzyme product prepared by this process. Typically, the enzyme-containing solution from a fermentation is concentrated and starch is added to the concentrate. Alternatively, a precipitation agent such as salt is added to the solution, and a cake containing the enzyme precipitates. The cake is then contacted with an aqueous solution containing starch to extract the enzyme out of the cake to provide a stable liquid enzyme product.

摘要: Normal plasma from donors who have not been vaccinated with a varicella-zoster vaccine can be screened for higher than normal titers of naturally occurring antibody to varicella-zoster virus. Those plasmas with high titers of such antibody can be pooled and fractionated to give hyperimmune globulin. The product may be treated to render it suitable for intravenous injection. Patients with varicella-zoster infection or at risk to such infection, may receive the present product to raise serum titers of varicella-zoster antibody.

摘要: Apparatus and process are disclosed for removing a single flexible member from a storage spool capable of holding multiple flexible members. This storage spool is designed to contain multiple elongated flexible members in an accurate position on the spool by means of radial channels or slots where the flexible members are held in place by interwinding material. By removing the interwinding material on a take up spool the individual flexible member can be positioned for removal from the storage spool by a pick up head or vacuum transport member. The invention has particular applicability to the handling of test devices, such as reagent strips, used in the determination of a biological constituent in a body fluid.
