A rotation speed is feedback controlled to a target rotation speed during idle running of an engine. When an automatic transmission is in a travel range, a brake is being operated and a vehicle speed is less than a predetermined value, the target rotation speed is decreased. A required vehicle creep force is different according to whether the vehicle has substantially stopped such as when it is waiting on a crossing, or whether it is moving in the idle running state as when it is being garaged or is following a vehicle in front of it in a traffic jam. By decreasing the target rotation speed according to the vehicle speed, an optimum creep force is obtained in both cases.

A vehicle safety system is equipped with a microcomputer for reliably detecting whether or not programs for controlling activation of passenger protection devices are being properly executed and, based on this detection, preventing problems from occurring in the control operations of the programs. According to one aspect of the invention, the system monitors a program executed on an interrupt basis at prescribed regular time intervals, a repeatedly executed program, and the operations of these programs, synchronously with the execution of the programs, and resets the microcomputer if an error is detected in the execution of either program. According to another, at the time of moving to a subroutine a code peculiar to the subroutine is saved at the entry portion and the saved code is compared with the code peculiar to the executed subroutine at the exit portion for detecting occurrence of error and if error is detected the microcomputer is reset.

An adaptive correction of an inappropriate shift operation is disclosed. During a power-off upshift, a variation in output torque of the transmission output shaft is detected. A decision is made based on this output torque variation whether or not the power-off 1-2 upshift has been effected in a predetermined appropriate manner, and a timing at which an on-coming friction device to be engaged during the power-off upshift is corrected based on the decision made. Thus, the shift operation during the next occurrence of a power-off upshift of the same type is effected in the appropriate manner.

A piston is slidably mounted in the second cylinder. A reservoir is communicating with the first cylinder. A hydraulic fluid is received in the first and the second cylinder and the reservoir. The hydraulic fluid is variable in viscosity in response to electric fields to which the fluid is subjected. A fluid passage is provided between the first cylinder and the reservoir for compensating for thermal expansion/contraction of the fluid. An electrode is provided for subjecting the hydraulic fluid to electric fields in the passage according to an instruction for applying the voltage to the piezo-actuator.

By presence of the communication control valve, the hunting in height adjustment can be successfully eliminated.

A bearing is arranged between the pinion carrier and the connecting member such that the pinion carrier is radially supported by the connecting member through the bearing to prevent a radial displacement of the pinion carrier with respect to the axis of the output shaft.

A system and method for controlling engine output applicable to an automotive vehicle are disclosed in which when an engine output control condition is not satisfied and a predetermined follow-up control release condition is not satisfied, a second throttle valve additionally installed in series with a first throttle valve associated with an accelerator is controlled so as to follow up the angular displacement (opening angle) of the first throttle valve. Therefore, a sticking of the second throttle valve due to adhering or freezing of rust or foreign matters thereonto can be prevented. In addition, the follow-up control of the second throttle valve permits the second throttle valve to be displaced in a low opening angle required for the engine output reduction control in a short period of time. Thus, a responsive characteristic of reducing a slip rate on drive wheels can be improved. When the follow-up throttle valve is returned toward its fully open position. Thus, a durability of a second throttle valve actuator can be enhanced. The second throttle valve, therefore, does not provide an intake air resistance and/or turbulence for the engine intake air.
