The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a board tray (7), to a tray blank feasible for the method, and to a tray obtained by the method. The method comprises moulding a blank of plastic-coated board into the tray (7) comprising a bottom (3), side walls (4), as well as a rim flange (5), the blank being compressed in a direction transverse to the tray's side walls and rim flange. According to the invention, the blank is made thinner on its side opposite to the plastic coating such that, during the moulding process, the plastic coating double-folds at the compressed parts and stabilizes compressions (8) by becoming sealed to itself. Making the blank thinner is most conveniently effected by carving the board layer with a laser beam for having the fiber material predominantly or completely removed from where the cuts are located. As a result of the moulding process, the tray's rim flange (5) develops a smooth plastic surface which enables closing the tray hermetically with a heat-sealed cover.

The invention relates to a digital printing method and a paper or board applicable thereto. In digital printing, the surface of a paper or board is charged electrically, toner particles are brought to the surface in an electric field in accordance with the printing, and the particles are melted fast to the surface with the help of heat for forming the printing. According to the invention, the paper or board (2) is provided with a coating layer (3) containing an electrically chargeable acrylate copolymer of ethylene, which receives the toner that is fused to the coating with the help of infra red radiation. Suitable coating polymers are especially methyl, ethyl and butyl acrylate copolymers of ethylene (EMA, EEA and EBA). Especially in packaging boards, besides the digitally printable layer, the polymer coatings can comprise a water vapour or oxygen barrier layer for protecting the packed product, and a heat-sealable layer on the opposite side of the board for sealing the package.

The invention relates to a cup package made of a fibre-based material and to a method for manufacturing it. The package comprises a cup 1 for the product 9 to be packaged and a lid 2 for closing the cup mouth. In accordance with the invention, the lid is partially nested in the cup, the adhesion between the inner surface of the cup and the lid retaining the lid in position. Adjacent beads, such as mouth rolls 5, 8 have been formed at the mouth of the cup and the edge of the lid, the beads acting as solder bases for the user's fingers/when the package is opened. The lid can be formed by connecting a discoid centre 6 and a surrounding frame 7 and by equipping the frame with a mouth roll by a technique corresponding to the manufacture of a cup formed of a bottom 4 and a mantle 3 connected to this.

In accordance with the invention, the sealable members are retained in position with clamps (8) and sealing is performed with a laser sealing means (7) moving along the sealing line, a means (9) for opening the seal point pressing the members apart to continue keeping the seal point open, a laser beam (11) being directed to the open seal point for melting the coating plastic and a means (12) for closing the seal pressing finally the members against each other, the plastic jointing the members when solidified. The invention relates to a heat-sealable packaging material and a sealed package formed from the same, especially for packaging foodstuffs. The packaging material comprises a base layer of paper or board and polymeric heat-sealable layers on one side of the base layer or, preferably, on both sides thereof. According to the invention, at least two layers of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) with different fractions of ethylene monomer are arranged on the packaging material to provide an oxygen barrier. The layers can locate against each other without a tie layer between them. The heat-sealable polymer can be a polyolefin, and, in addition, other polymeric barrier layers can be incorporated into the material to improve its oxygen, fat and aroma tightness.
