Abstract: A surgical tool including a housing having a proximal end and a distal end, a yoke disposed within the housing between the proximal end and the distal end, a handle pivotally coupled to the housing, and a pivot assembly coupling the yoke to the housing. The pivot assembly includes a first link having a first end and a second end. The first end of the first link is rotatably coupled to the housing and the second end of the first link rotatably coupled to a second link at a first end of the second link. The second link has a second end rotatably coupled to the yoke. The handle is coupled to the pivot assembly such that movement of the handle causes movement of the yoke.

Abstract: A surgical stapling instrument comprising a handle, a shaft extending from the handle, an end effector, a replaceable staple cartridge, a drive system, and a battery pack is disclosed. The handle comprises a battery mount. The end effector comprises a cartridge jaw and an anvil jaw. The drive system comprises an electric motor, a control circuit in communication with the electric motor, a firing member driveable by the electric motor during a firing stroke to eject staples from the staple cartridge. The battery pack is removably attachable to the battery mount. The battery pack comprises an outer housing, a battery cell, an electrical contact, a metal heat sink disposed within the outer housing, and control electronics in communication with the battery cell and the electrical contact that is operable to supply power to the control circuit when the battery pack is attached to the battery mount.

Abstract: A medical device is provided. The medical device includes an elongated device body having a steerable portion including a plurality of segments. The segments are co-axially mounted over at least one elongated elastic element which is configured for limiting rotation of the segments with respect to each other. The medical device also includes a control wire running alongside the elongated device body and being unrestrained at the steerable portion such that tensioning of the control wire angles the steerable portion from a longitudinal axis of the elongated device body and deflects the control wire away from the steerable portion.

Abstract: Laparoscopic Knot Applicator is a tool designed to facilitate application of “surgeons Knot” (FIG. 2) to ligate vessels and structures during laparoscopic procedures. Applying the secure surgeons knot in any surgical procedure is a life saving basic skill but it is a difficult task in laparoscopic surgeries. Operation of this tool (FIG. 3) ensures application of safer and secure knots compared to currently available techniques like clips, loops and Harmonic scalpel. Simple design of this tools enables laparoscopic surgeon to apply very secure conventional “surgeons knot” easily during laparoscopic surgeries even in a very limited surgical space. Cleaning and the sterilization of the instrument which is essential in surgical procedures is very easy as there are no electronic parts incorporated.

Abstract: A surgical device for stapling patient tissue is disclosed. The surgical device comprises a housing, a rotator operably supported in the housing, and an elongate shaft operably coupled to and extending from the housing. The elongate shaft defines a shaft axis and includes a flexible shaft portion. The surgical device further comprises an end effector operably coupled to the flexible shaft portion. The end effector comprises a staple cartridge and a firing member which is displaced distally to staple the patient tissue in response to at least one actuation motion applied at the housing. The surgical device further comprises a flexible actuator extending along the shaft axis such that selective actuation of the flexible actuator causes articulation of the end effector. The flexible actuator is operably coupled between the end effector and the rotator. The firing member extends through the elongate shaft.

Abstract: A handle for use with a surgical instrument system can comprise a first handle housing portion comprising an output and a second handle housing portion comprising, one, an electric motor comprising a rotatable motor shaft and, two, an actuator for operating the electric motor. The handle further comprises an articulation joint, wherein the second handle housing portion is rotatably connected to the first handle housing portion about the articulation joint, and wherein the second handle housing portion is rotatable between a first grip position and a second grip position. The handle further includes a transmission configured to transmit motion between the first motor shaft and the output. In various instances, the transmission comprises a cable and a slip joint configured to adjust the length of the cable depending on the position of said second handle housing portion.

Abstract: Surgical devices are disclosed herein that generally include an intracorporeal elbow joint to facilitate translational movement of an end effector while allowing a body portion of the surgical device and a trocar or working channel through which the device is inserted to be maintained in a fixed angular orientation relative to the patient. This allows a plurality of such devices to be used effectively with a single incision or access device. Such devices also generally provide end effector movement with six degrees of freedom, while maintaining a mechanical linkage between the user and the end effector and while mimicking and/or mirroring natural user movement. Various methods related to such devices are also disclosed.

Abstract: An articulation mechanism for a surgical instrument includes an articulation assembly, a plurality of cables, and a trigger. The cables are coupled to the articulation assembly at a proximal end thereof and extend distally therefrom. The cables are configured to engage an end effector assembly of the surgical instrument at a distal end thereof. The trigger is coupled to the articulation assembly and is selectively moveable from a shipping position to a use position. In the shipping position, the cables are substantially un-tensioned. In the use position, the cables are disposed in an initial tensioned position. In the use position, the trigger is moveable between an unlocked position and a locked position. In the unlocked position, the cables are selectively tensionable to articulate the end effector assembly. In the locked position, the tensions on the cables are maintained to lock the end effector assembly in position.
