Retracting the needle within the safety enclosure to a point wherein the sharp tip of the needle is beyond the needle protection section of the flexible member causes the protection section to travel transversely to the direction of motion of the needle. As a result, the safety feature receives the sharp tip of the needle.

The needle unit includes a needle and a spindle shaped needle holder mounted inside the outlet. A connecting stem has an arrowhead shaped mortise disposed under the spindle shaped needle holder. A plunger has a plunger head on the top thereof with an arrowhead shaped tenon eccentrically disposed thereon. A supporting plate disposed under the plunger head has two guide notches matched with two longitudinal guide strips inside the barrel, so that the arrowhead shaped tenon aligns with the needle unit. After completion of the injection, the arrowhead shaped tenon and the needle unit are connected together, the needle unit can then be pulled into the barrel and subsequently deformed.

When the piston of the plunger is pushed to the bottom, the detent is easily and firmly engaged and hooked with the click. Thereafter, the injection needle and the needle holder can be together pulled into the barrel with the tip of the injection needle positioned under the shoulder section of the barrel. A flow path (36, 44) exists between the interior (46) of the syringe barrel and each needle assembly when each needle assembly is in the extended position. The use of two needles allows one needle to be used to aspirate the liquid pharmaceutical into the syringe and the other, unused needle to be used to give the injection. Each needle assembly is irreversibly locked (54, 60) when moved into the retracted position to prevent syringe reuse.
