Abstract:
This invention relates to methods and apparatus for making articles made of polyester, preferably polyethylene terephthalate (PET), having coated directly to at least one of the surfaces thereof one or more layers of thermoplastic material with good gas-barrier characteristics. In one preferred method and apparatus, preforms are injection molded, barrier-coated immediately thereafter, and remain on a mold portion for a time to speed cooling of the completed preform. Preferably the barrier-coated articles take the form of preforms coated by at least one layer of barrier material and the containers are blow-molded therefrom. Such barrier-coated containers are preferably of the type to hold beverages such as soft drinks, beer or juice. The preferred barrier materials have a lower permeability to oxygen and carbon dioxide than PET as well as key physical properties similar to PET. The materials and methods provide that the barrier layers have good adherence to PET, even during and after the blow molding process to form containers from preforms. Preferred barrier coating materials include poly(hydroxyamino ethers).

The first inner layer comprises a first material selected from a group consisting of polyester, phenoxy type thermoplastics, phenoxy-polyolefin thermoplastic blends, and combinations thereof. The second layer comprises a second material selected from a group consisting of virgin PET, recycled PET, PETG, foam, polypropylene, polyester, polyolefins, phenoxy type thermoplastic, phenoxy-polyolefin thermoplastic blends, regrind scrap materials, and combinations thereof. Polyester articles, particularly bottles and cans, which have good oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability resistance are very useful for packaging foods and beverages. This invention discloses multi-layer articles which have excellent oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability resistance. These multi-layer articles have at least one layer which is made from a polyisophthalate, a polyisophthalate copolymer, a melt blend of polyethylene isophthalate with polyethylene terephthalate, or a high molecular weight polyester resin which is prepared by solid state polymerizing a polyethylene isophthalate prepolymer and a polyethylene terephthalate prepolymer simultaneously together. Such multi-layer articles also have at least one layer which is made from a polyterephthalate compound or a copolymer thereof.

A process for producing a stretched multilayer polyester bottle which comprises axially stretching a bottomed multilayer preform comprised of an inside and an outside polyester surface layer and an interlayer of a gas-barrier resin provided therebetween optionally through an adhesive under conditions which induce molecular orientation of the polyester and simultaneously stretching it circumferentially by blowing. The multilayer preform is produced by coating a solution or emulsion of an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer on one surface of a primary preform of the polyester molded in advance, drying the coated preform at a temperature at which no whitening owing to the crystallization of the polyester occurs to thereby form a thin but continuous film of the ethylene-vinyl alcohol polymer on the primary preform, mounting the coated pre-form on an injection mold, and injection the polyester onto the coated layer to form the inside or outside surface layer of the polyester. This process enables the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer to be interposed as the interlayer of the stretched polyester bottle in a thickness which does not hamper the stretching operation but is sufficient to ensure its gas-barrier property.

A method and apparatus for forming hollow objects of moldable organic plastic material by providing a parison on a blow core, locating said blow core bearing said parison in a blow mold, expanding said parison within said blow mold, separating said expanded parison from said core while the parison remains in said blow mold and transferring said expanded parison from said blow core within said blow mold to another core and/or blow mold. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of cores and molds are employed to provide an extended cooling sequence for the final article.
