    Abstract: A wheel for an in-line skate or other wheeled vehicle is disclosed that may be modified to alter the rolling resistance of the wheel. The wheel may be disassembled to change a tire on the outer surface of the wheel to one made of a harder or softer material, and to insert or change a grease of a chosen viscosity into a chamber inside the wheel. The two changes may be utilized singly or collectively to help set the rolling resistance of the wheel. The wheel may be retrofit onto existing in-line roller skates.

    Abstract: A device for injecting grease into a wheel bearing avoids the need for removing the seal ring of the wheel bearing. The device has a hollow mandrel with a closed bottom. A flange extends outward from the mandrel for contact with an inner cage ring of the hearing. A collar extends radially outward from the mandrel above the flange. The collar has an outer edge for contacting the seal ring. The collar is axially movable relative to the flange. A spring urges the collar and flange apart from each other. A port is located in the mandrel between the collar and the flange. A grease fitting allows grease to be introduced into the mandrel to flow out the port, into the space between the collar and the flange, and into the wheel bearing.

    Abstract: A wheel assembly includes a wheel including a spoke portion radially supporting a rim portion about a central axis, wherein the rim portion presents a radial outer surface relative to the central axis. A tire is mounted to the wheel and cooperates with the wheel to define a tire cavity between the radial outer surface of the rim portion and the tire. A foamed aluminum portion is supported by the wheel, and includes a plurality of pores arranged to define an open-cell foam. The plurality of pores of the foamed aluminum portion is disposed in fluid communication with the tire cavity to absorb noise from within the tire cavity. The foamed aluminum portion may be integrally cast with the wheel, or otherwise affixed to the wheel.

    Abstract: A central tire inflation system for maintaining tire inflation on a vehicle is provided. The central tire inflation system includes a rotary union assembly having a housing that is coupled to and rotates with the hubcap. The housing is rotationally coupled to a stationary shaft. A flexible torque transfer shaft is connected to the stationary shaft on one end and to an axle plug on the other end. The axle plug has a hub forming, a bore where the hub is movable on a web of material. The flexible torque transfer shaft and hub have cooperative non-circular shapes to resist rotation. An air vent is provided in the rotary union assembly that is isolated from the lubrication area, which inhibits the pressurized air from the central tire inflation system from pressurizing the lubrication area.

    Abstract: A hub-axle assembly (10) and lubrication system thereof includes a spindle (11) having an inner end (12) and outer end (15) with inner (13) and outer (14) bearing assemblies spaced axially on the spindle (11). A hub body (16) is rotatably supported on the bearing assemblies (13, 14) and has a wheel mounting flange (17) extending radially outward therefrom. Lug bolts (18) extend axially outward from the flange (17) with one such lug bolt (18) having an axial bore (24) therein. Grease applied at a grease fitting (23) in the axial bore (24) is transmitted to a lubrication chamber (19) within the hub body (16) via tubing (25) to lubricate the lubrication chamber (19). A circumferential recess (27) in the hub body (16) has at least one aperture (28) therein which is normally closed by an O-ring (29) positioned in the recess (27). However, when the pressure of the grease within the hub body (16) is sufficient to indicate that the lubrication chamber (19) has been lubricated, the O-ring (29) will expand causing grease to flow through the aperture (28).
