The composition is allowed to form a matrix within the wellbore, whereby the matrix at least one of significantly reduces the passage of fluid across or near the matrix or provides structural strength. A treatment operation is performed on the subterranean formation or wellbore and the degrading material is allowed to degrade the matrix.

The modifying agent is selected from materials capable of beneficially modifying the matrix fiber composite after curing. The modifying agents are selectively released into the surrounding matrix in use in response to a predetermined stimulus be it internal or externally applied. The hollow fibers may be closed off or even coated to provide a way to keep the modifying agent in the fibers until the appropriate time for selective release occurs. Self-repair, smart fiber matrix composite materials capable of repairing microcracks, releasing corrosion inhibitors or permeability modifiers are described as preferred embodiments in concrete and polymer based shaped articles.

Systems are provided for imparting an antiquing characteristic to a substrate. The substrate includes a base coat of color such as an acid stain. A masking composition is applied over the substrate having the acid stain. Another of layer of acid stain is applied over the masking composition. Preferably, the masking composition includes a mixture of water, loess, clay, bicarbonate of soda, and optionally includes sand. The masking composition serves as a mask to prevent the acid stain from staining the portions of the substrate covered by the masking composition, while allowing the acid stain to contact the portions of the substrate not covered by the masking composition. A chemical reaction occurs between the acid stain and the substrate. Any excess material is removed revealing the substrate having characteristics of an antiqued surface, such as a mottled or variegated design. Other systems and methods are also provided.
