A composition comprising thermoset polymer, shape memory polymer to facilitate macro scale damage closure, and a thermoplastic polymer for molecular scale healing is disclosed; the composition has the ability to resolve structural defects by a bio-mimetic close-then heal process. In use, the shape memory polymer serves to bring surfaces of a structural defect into approximation, whereafter use of the thermoplastic polymer for molecular scale healing allowed for movement of the thermoplastic polymer into the defect and thus obtain molecular scale healing. The thermoplastic can be fibers, particles or spheres which are used by heating to a level at or above the thermoplastic's melting point, then cooling of the composition below the melting temperature of the thermoplastic. Compositions of the invention have the ability to not only close macroscopic defects, but also to do so repeatedly even if another wound/damage occurs in a previously healed/repaired area.

A method for self-curing concrete is provided to solve the problem that the degree of cement hydration is lowered due to the improper curing, and thus unsatisfactory properties of concrete. According to the invention, at least a layer of self-curing agent is applied onto a concrete after placing. The self-curing agent can absorb moisture from atmosphere and then release it into concrete. The concrete can be self-cured without the need for applying extra water or external curing.

Systems and methods for enhanced autogenous healing of cracks that are formed or are present in concrete-containing materials and surfaces are disclosed. Treatment modalities that include addition of the disclosed materials, compositions and systems to pre- and post-construction concrete-containing materials and surfaces are provided. Autogenous healing is effected at a greater rate and to a larger degree as compared to control systems. The disclosed compositions and systems also yield reductions in the rate and/or impact of corrosion are achieved for concrete-containing structures and surfaces and, despite the water soluble properties of the compositions and systems, the treatments are effective in delivering an advantageous level of moisture resistance to the treated concrete-containing structure and/or surface. The composition is synthesized from a feedstock that includes C9 to C16 branched hydrocarbons of varying structures.

The fill according to the invention comprises a mixture of 1-30% by weight cement with 99-70% by weight of various waste material, fly-ash, de-sulphurization product or granulated blast-furnace slag. The mixture can be used dry or mixed with water, and may also be mixed with air to form small bubbles, thereby rendering the mixture frost resistant. The fill can be used to fill different cavities and pits, such as pipe-laying and cable-laying trenches, floor cavities and holes in streets and roads, and for covering mounds of waste, rubbish dumps and for encapsulating harmful waste. When filling pipe-laying and cable-laying trenches, the intermediate layer of sand, and will thereby prevent water from entering into or leaking from the pipes, while at the same time holding the pipes in position and affording a stabilizing effect against ground movement. The fill hardens to a maximum strength of 10-15 MPa after one or more years, but retains sufficient softness to enable it to be dug-up without difficulty, this hardness becoming a maximum of 10-15 MPa after one or more years.
