The present invention provides a method of converting a hydroxy group in alcohols containing an electron withdrawing group into perfluoroalkane sulfonate and fluorosulfonate esters, which are good leaving groups, with inversion of configuration where the hydroxyl-bearing carbon is chiral. The method consists of converting an alcohol to an O—N,N-dialkylsulfamate ester and reacting it with a perfluoroalkansulfonic or fluorosulfonic acid. The method has applications in the synthesis of pharmaceutical and agrochemical compounds.

The preparation of magnesium benzyl fluoromalonate and other equivalent materials, the synthetic equivalents of the --CH.sub.2 F moiety, is described. Reaction between these reagents and the in situ-formed imidazolides of various carboxylic acids gives beta-keto-alpha-fluoroesters, which upon hydrogenation and spontaneous decarboxylation yields fluoromethyl ketones in excellent yields. The overall transformation from RCOOH to RCOCH.sub.2 F is thus illustrated.

Sulfonic acids, particularly amido-substituted sulfonic acids and preferably acrylamidoalkanesulfonic acids, can be esterified by reaction with (A) an ester of phosphoric acid or (B) an adduct of an ester of a strong acid (preferably sulfuric acid) with an amide such as dimethylformamide. This method is especially useful for the preparation of lower alkyl esters, especially the methyl and ethyl esters. The esters are useful monomers, especially for copolymerization with acrylic compounds to produce polymers of improved dyeability.
