New aliphatic azo compounds containing an .alpha.-hydroperoxy group and the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts thereof as represented by the general structure ##STR1## processes for preparing I where M is H and R is t-aliphatic by reacting t-aliphatic azo compounds having an .alpha.-halo substituent with about an equimolar amount of sodium or hydrogen peroxide; processes for converting I where M is H to its alkali or alkaline earth metal salt by reaction with aqueous solutions of the corresponding base or with calcium or sodium hydride; and the use of these novel compounds as polymerization initiators for vinyl monomers and as curing agents for resins. For example, 2-t-butylazo-2-hydroperoxy-4-methylpentane is prepared from sodium peroxide and 2-t-butylazo-2-chloro-4-methylpentane and used to polymerize vinyl chloride and to cure unsaturated polyester resin.

A method for modifying a heterophasic polymer composition comprises the steps of providing a compatibilizing agent, providing a heterophasic polymer composition comprising a propylene polymer phase and an ethylene polymer phase, mixing the compatibilizing agent and the heterophasic polymer composition, and generating free radicals in the propylene phase and the ethylene phase. At least a portion of the compatibilizing agent then reacts with free radicals in both the propylene polymer phase and the ethylene polymer phase to form a bond with a propylene polymer in the propylene polymer phase and a bond with an ethylene polymer in the ethylene polymer phase.

A method of creating a modified heterophasic polyolefin composition is provided, whereby a polyolefin composition having at least two phases is melt mixed with a free radical generator, such as a peroxide, and a compatibilizing agent characterized by at least one nitroxide radical and at least one unsaturated bond capable of undergoing a radical addition reaction. Modified heterophasic polyolefin compositions with increased melt flow rates, impact strength, and clarity, which incorporate the compatibilizing agent, are also included within the scope of the invention.

Tertiary aromatic amines derived from para-aminophenethanol act as accelerators for the peroxide catalyzed polymerization of vinyl monomers, especially methacrylates and acrylates, and for the curing of unsaturated polyesters. The amines are characterized by generally high reactivity and low toxicity, and by their yielding polymers of high strength and low color, and are thereby particularly suited for use in polymerizable or curable formulations employed in the filling and restoration of human teeth, in the preparation of cold-curing denture base materials for fabricating or repairing dentures and in the cementing of bone.
