摘要: This invention provides processes and systems for converting biomass into high-carbon biogenic reagents that are suitable for a variety of commercial applications. Some embodiments employ pyrolysis in the presence of an inert gas to generate hot pyrolyzed solids, condensable vapors, and non-condensable gases, followed by separation of vapors and gases, and cooling of the hot pyrolyzed solids in the presence of the inert gas. Additives may be introduced during processing or combined with the reagent, or both. The biogenic reagent may include at least 70 wt %, 80 wt %, 90 wt %, 95 wt %, or more total carbon on a dry basis. The biogenic reagent may have an energy content of at least 12,000 Btu/lb, 13,000 Btu/lb, 14,000 Btu/lb, or 14,500 Btu/lb on a dry basis. The biogenic reagent may be formed into fine powders, or structural objects. The structural objects may have a structure and/or strength that derive from the feedstock, heat rate, and additives.

摘要: Apparatus and a process are described for compressing superheated steam into porous coal batches in chambers, and, after a time interval, expanding this steam out of the chambers, and repeating this steam cycle of compression followed by expansion. Thusly heated by the steam, volatile matter separates from the solid coke portion of the coal and separate volatile matter and coke products can be produced from coal or biomass fuels. These volatile matter liquids and tars can be used as fuel components in slurry fuels, for internal combustion engines used in our surface transportation industries. These solid coke products can be used as boiler fuel in steam electric plants. In this way our large domestic reserves of coal can be used as a fuel source, not only for electric power generation, but also for our surface transportation needs.

摘要: The invention concerns a process for removing dust from coke cooled by a dry method after the coke has left the cooling zone of a cooling chamber, and a device for carrying out the process. A dust-free flushing gas is injected below the cooling zone, preferably parallel to the direction in which the coke moves when it has been cooled to below 200.degree. C., to draw the gas off above the discharge lock together with the stirred-up coke dust, and to recirculate the gas after the dust is removed from it. As an alternative, compressed air is blown through the coke after it has left the lock and while it is being transported through a vibrating machine. The coke is cooled in a dry cooling unit to below 200.degree. C. and preferably 130.degree. to 180.degree. C. The coke is then cooled outside the dry cooling unit by means of air at about 50.degree. to 90.degree. C. and preferably 70.degree. to 80.degree. C. Either simultaneously with or immediately after the cooling step with air, the coke is moistened, for example by sprinkling or spraying, to a residual moisture of 2% to 4% by weight and preferably 2% to 3% by weight.

摘要: In a formed coke process of the type in which carbonization and calcination of coal is carried out prior to briquetting, the hot calcined char is cooled by means of a hydrogen-rich gas at superatmospheric pressure so as to effect concurrent cooling and desulfurization of the char. High sulfur coal containing 1.5 to 4 wt. % sulfur can be used while obtaining a char and a formed coke product with a sulfur content of 0.8 wt. % or less. The cooling can be done in two stages: (1) a first stage in which sulfur removal and cooling to a temperature not lower than about 800.degree. F. are accomplished with a hydrogen-rich gas, and (2) a second stage in which further cooling to about 200.degree. F. or less is accomplished with an inert gas.

摘要: Biomass is converted into a bio-oil containing stream in a riser reactor having multiple ports for the entry of fresh catalyst. Hard coke formed during pyrolysis may be separated from the riser effluent fraction containing which contains spent catalyst, soft coke and char. The separated hard coke may then be fed back into the riser reactor. The riser reactor may further have a cooling media which quenches the rapid heat transfer to the biomass during pyrolysis of the biomass in the mixing zone of the riser.
