The present invention deals with activation and start-up procedures of catalysts for the deep HDS of middle distillates for producing ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD), consisting of two in situ activation stages: at stage 1, TGA is applied, and at stage 2, DMDS is used; kerosene is the transport means at these stages, which are carried out under given temperature and pressure conditions, and feedstock and hydrogen flows at established times. After the activation of the catalyst in situ, the stabilization stage takes place under selected temperature and pressure conditions, feedstock and hydrogen flow at established times, with which the stabilization of the highly dispersed metallic sulfides is achieved and, in this way, the activity of the catalysts removing contaminants for the production of ULSD is increased.

A process for hydrogenating a Fischer-Tropsch (“FT”) wax includes placing hydrogenation catalyst particles within a low-temperature hydrogenation reactor having a mixing sub-system and a vent at the top for excess hydrogen, placing the FT wax at a low temperature up to a predetermined level within the low-temperature, hydrogenation reactor, leaving a vapor space above the predetermined level, adding hydrogen under a desired pressure into the low-temperature hydrogenation reactor, mixing the input FT wax, the hydrogen gas and the hydrogenating catalyst particles together to create a mixture using the mixing subsystem and continuing the mixing until the FT wax has hydrogenated, stopping the mixing to allow the hydrogenation catalyst particles to settle, and removing an hydrogenated FT wax with residual hydrogenating catalyst particles from the low-temperature hydrogenation reactor. The hydrogenated FT wax may be filtered and subjected to vacuum distillation. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

The process comprises a hydrotreatment stage followed by a hydrocracking stage, each of which is conducted under liquid-full reaction conditions wherein substantially all the hydrogen supplied to the hydrotreating and hydrocracking reactions is dissolved in the liquid-phase hydrocarbon feed. Ammonia and optionally other gases formed during hydrotreatment are removed in a separation step prior to hydrocracking. The LCO feed is advantageously converted to diesel in high yield with little loss of hydrocarbon to naphtha.

Herein disclosed is a method for hydrogenation comprising: supersaturating a hydrocarbonaceous liquid or slurry stream in a high shear device with a gas stream comprising hydrogen and optionally one or more C1-C6 hydrocarbons to form a supersaturated dispersion; and introducing the supersaturated dispersion into a reactor in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to generate a product stream. In some embodiments, the catalyst is present as a slurry or a fluidized or fixed bed of catalyst. In some embodiments, the hydrogenation catalyst is mixed with the hydrocarbonaceous liquid or slurry stream and the gas stream in the high shear device. In some embodiments, the method further comprises recycling at least a portion of an off gas from the reactor, recycling at least a portion of the product stream from the reactor, or both. Also disclosed herein is a system for hydrogenation.
