摘要:
An internal combustion engine having six in-line piston and cylinder assemblies providing a center pair, an intermediate pair and an outer pair, each pair having crankshaft connected pistons mounted in cylinders through simultaneous repetitive strokes four of which together constitute simultaneous repetitive cycles including a drive event injectors selectively (1) in a (Mode 1) to inject fuel in both cylinders and (2) in a (Mode 2) to inject fuel in only one cylinder, the cylinders of the center pair being intercommunicated by a passage. The effect of skipping an injection in (Mode 2) in the center pair is a pair of shared power drive events and in the other pairs the effect in one of the cylinders is a directly fired power drive shaft and the effect in the other cylinder is deactivation and a method of operating the engine in a vehicle.

An internal combustion engine having two banks of four piston and cylinder assemblies arranged in an inverted V configuration so that there are four pairs of assemblies each pair having cylinders with adjacent combustion chambers intercommunicated by a passage extending therebetween. Crank shaft driven pistons in said cylinders movable within the combustion chambers thereof through successive cycles each including a compression stroke followed immediately by a power drive stroke. Computer controlled fuel injectors are capable of being selectively controlled to operate either to inject fuel into (1) both cylinders of a pair to establish therein a double fire single expansion mode, or (2) into only one cylinder of a pair to establish therein a single fire double expansion mode with the one cylinder receiving the injection being alternated between the pair every predetermined number of piston cycles. A method of operating the engine as a prime mover of a vehicle having a cruise control system manually actuated to effect automatic movement of a normally manually moved accelerator pedal either in (1) a normal mode wherein the amount of fuel injected is maintained substantially that an optimum level and power variation is obtained in response to manual pedal movements by varying the relative number of injector pairs operating in modes (1) or (2) in a cruise control mode wherein all four injector pairs operate in mode (2) and power variation is obtained in response to automatic and pedal movements by varying the amount of fuel injected.

An opposed piston internal combustion engine can include two opposed pistons (104, 110) moving reciprocally along respective axes of translation (202, 204) that are not collinear. First and second cylinder bores (502, 504) can be inclined to each other at an included angle (a). A combustion volume or chamber (114) can optionally be defined at least in part by crowns (102, 106) of the first and second pistons (104, 110) reciprocating in the first and second cylinder bores (502, 504), respectively. Related methods, systems, and articles of manufacture are described.

The invention consists of a two-stroke opposing cylinder engine that includes a length flushing system and two crankshafts (1, 3) and a novel type of phase setting mechanism which enables the compression ratio to be adjusted in operation. Two intermediate gear wheel (15) and (16) synchronize rotation of the crankshafts (1, 3). The centre positions of the two intermediate gear wheels (15, 16) are moved by means of a setting device (21) so as to change the phase position between the crank shafts (1, 3) and therewith the compression. With the aid of the two intermediate gear wheels (15, 16) the crankshafts will rotate in mutually opposite directions, therewith eliminating torque-dependent vibrations.

An internal combustion engine which includes two parallel crankshafts positioned in crankcases, a cylinder positioned on a side of the crankcases, a piston movably disposed within the cylinder, and connecting rods linked to the piston and extending from respective crankshafts. Positions at which the two connecting rods are linked to the piston and the crankshafts are constantly kept symmetrical with respect to a cylinder axis when the two crankshafts rotate in opposite directions.

A compression ignition, internal combustion engine has at least one pair of pistons operating in separate cylinders interconnected through a transfer port. Said at least one pair of pistons includes a leading piston linked to a leading crankshaft and operating in a leading cylinder, and a trailing piston linked to a trailing crankshaft and operating in a trailing cylinder. For the purpose of varying the compression ratio, the phase relation between said leading and trailing pistons is varied by means of a phase adjustment mechanism which operatively couples the leading and trailing crankshafts of the engine. The fuel is injected into the leading cylinder by means of a centrally situated multi-hole fuel injector. The clearance volume of the trailing cylinder is at a practical minimum in order to maximize the amount of air available for combustion in the leading cylinder. The combustion bowl in the leading cylinder extends over substantially the whole top surface of the leading piston so as to eliminate the stepwise changes of combustion chamber shape associated with compression ratio variation.

A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine comprising: first and second crankshafts disposed apart from and parallel with each other; first and second pistons operatively connected to the first and second crankshafts through connecting rods, respectively; and first and second cylinders for slidably accommodating therein the first and second pistons, respectively, both the crankshafts being interlocked with each other to rotate synchronously, the first and second cylinders being disposed adjacent to each other in the axial directions of the crankshafts. Vibrations due to the primary inertial force can be eliminated or alleviated without using a special balancer shaft. The size and weight of the engine are greatly reduced as compared with a conventional horizontally opposed type or V type engine.

A marine Diesel engine consists of parallel left and right engines mounted on a common bed plate having integral independent columns on which the cylinders of the engine are supported, the bed plate and columns forming the crank chambers of the engines. The exhaust and scavenging pipes for the engines are constructed as common parts, the scavenging pipe being mounted between the engines and being flexibly connected to at least one of them so as to permit relative movement between the engine upper portions. A single propeller shaft is driven at a desired low r.p.m. from the crank shafts of the engines through a gearing device consisting simply of a gear on the propeller shaft meshing with a pair of pinions each connected to one of the engine crank shafts by an elastic coupling. As compared with a conventional single bank Diesel engine, such a twin bank Diesel engine permits a ship of given dwt to be driven at the same speed with appreciable savings in fuel consumption, in engine weight, and in engine room size with a corresponding increase in cargo carrying capacity.
