    摘要: A thermostatic air control for assist air to a fuel injector utilizes a bi-metallic ring to seal the air inlets when the engine temperature has increased. This in effect prevents the flow of assist air when the engine is warm and the need for assist air is not required. The bi-metallic ring can have either a positive or negative temperature coefficient and is positioned either on the inside or the outside, respectively of the air assist shroud of either a top or bottom feed fuel injector. A small orifice having a predetermined size and discharge coefficient provides a constant air flow to the output of the injector.

    摘要: An electrical device such as a piezoelectric actuator is protected against permeation by injurious fluids such as fuel (diesel/gasoline) and water by encapsulating the device with a shape memory metallic material. The shape memory metallic material may be in the form of a tube manufactured to the required dimensions for encapsulation of the device. The tube may then be plastically deformed, such as by stretching, before being placed over the device and heated above its transformation temperature to recover its original shape. The invention is particularly suitable for protecting passivated piezoelectric actuators.

    摘要: A fuel injector assembly for an internal combustion engine includes an injector body having a control valve in fluid communication with a source of fuel. A fuel nozzle assembly is employed to disperse fuel from the assembly. A high pressure fuel passage provides fluid communication between the control valve and the fuel nozzle assembly. The high pressure fuel passage has at least one end opening through the injector body and having an inner diameter. A shape memory alloy plug seals the open end of the fuel passage. The plug has a first diameter smaller than the inner diameter when inserted into the open end and a second diameter in sealing engagement with the inner diameter upon undergoing a metallurgical phase change from martinsite to austenite such that the plug generates a seal with the fuel passage. In addition, a method of making the fuel injector assembly employing a shape memory alloy plug to seal the high pressure fuel passage is also disclosed.

    摘要: A fuel injector includes a fuel valve including a valve needle and a valve seat for controlling a flow of fuel through the injector. The fuel injector also includes an electromagnetic actuator with a solenoid and an armature that lifts the valve needle from the valve seat in an opening direction while the solenoid is electrically energized. The fuel injector also includes a housing in which the valve needle and the armature are received such that they are displaceable in reciprocating fashion with respect to the housing and with respect to one another. A spring is arranged between the armature and the housing, for pushing the armature against the valve needle in the opening direction, wherein the spring provides a hysteretic relationship between force and displacement.

    摘要: Conventional devices have a valve needle and a shape memory element which, by the application of a controllable magnetic field, executes a control stroke travel that operates the actuator, and having a coil that excites the magnetic field which is situated in a magnet housing which, at its end face, is bordered with respect to an actuating axis by a front wall in each case, the front walls having a through opening radially within the coil. It is a disadvantage that the magnetic field excited around the coil is conducted unfavorably, so that at most a slight magnetic field develops in the shape memory element. The shape memory element has a magnetic field flowing through it, in the direction of its longitudinal extension, if at all. Since the shape memory element has a high magnetic resistance and is developed to be very long in the axial direction, only a very weak magnetic field can be induced in the shape memory element. In response to the magnetic field that is weak at most, the shape memory element can generate only a very slight lift of the valve needle. In the device according to the present invention, a strong magnetic field is conducted through the shape memory elements, and in this way, a large control stroke travel is achieved. The shape memory element(s) is/are positioned generally only in the through opening(s).

    摘要: A shape memory alloy actuator assembly for a fuel injector, having a small package integral design, wherein the response times of the shape memory alloy element is decreased to less than about 1 millisecond by forced, convective heat transfer from the SMA element or elements. The forced, convective heat transfer is provided by the circulation of fluid across the SMA element by a metering orifice plate, which directs a fluid flow across the SMA element so as to maximize the area of contact between the fuel and the SMA element, regardless of whether the fuel injection valve is opened or closed. Use of forced convective heat transfer in accordance with the present invention allows greater power input levels than previously possible without resulting in an over-temperature condition of the SMA alloy, as well as constant response times. Actuator production costs are reduced by 40%, whereby side fame rails of the actuator are eliminated, and the spacer and the orifice plate are incorporated into a second wafer, which is bonded to the first wafer, which includes SMA material and a valve seal island.

    摘要: A simple and compact fuel supply system which prevents generation of fuel vapor in a delivery pipe of an engine includes a check valve is disposed at a down stream portion of a fuel pressure relieving member or a fuel pressure regulator to seal the fuel delivery pipe when the engine stops so that the pressure in the delivery pipe increases as fuel vapor is generated and, consequently, generation of the fuel vapor is automatically suppressed. Transmission of a pressure wave from the delivery pipe caused while injectors are operating is prevented by the check valve so that harsh noise, which is otherwise caused by resonant vibration of fuel supply pipes and related members, is suppressed.
