A decorative shaped digital computer media disk such as a CD or DVD Rom is provided which may contain either aural and/or video information. It is intended that the media disk may be shaped as an ornament or gift tag for the holidays or special occasions and it may be provided with an aperture in its outer periphery to place a wire or string hanger there through, or it may be shaped in a rectangle to resemble either a business card, a sports trading cord, or even a representative piece from a board game or other computer game. In the case of a sports trading card, the media disk may have the player's image imprinted thereupon and the disk may contain a detailed sports history as well as video and news clips. In the case of a business card, the shaped digital computer media disk may contain advertising and marketing information. It is anticipated that these shaped discs may be molded in the shape of the finished product, or they may be made in a different shape, or even a round form, and then either loser cut, tool cut or die cut and a hanging aperture may be provided in the outer periphery of the disk.

An opening in the plastic layer provides space for the rotating magnetic disk. A mechanism is provided to open a shutter when the card is inserted into a reader. Data is written to or read from the disk by positioning heads from an external system into openings in the external surface of the card. When the card is not engaged in a reader, the shutter covers the openings.

A duplicating, printing or recording surface is produced by attaching a strip (10) of magnetic or other web material to a support such as a drum (20) or flat support element provided with a layer (22) of low durometer elastomer, the strip of material and the elastomeric material being mutually adherent. With the strip of material wrapped circumferentially around the drum, a sharp knife is used to cut the magnetic material and form a precise butt joint (35,36), diagonal or straight, with a minimal gap. The strip of material forms a secure bond with the low durometer elastomeric layer because of the inherent mutual adherence between the two materials, without the need for an intervening adhesive material. A compliant magnetic drum of this type has a low radial stiffness and a high circumferential stiffness which are well suited for a master recording drum in an anhysteretic duplicating apparatus.

Presented is a support structure for annular magnetic recording disks of the "hard" type used in computers. These types of disks are not usually manufactured by the same manufacturer that manufactures the disk drive mechanism. In many instances the disk drive manufacturer is far removed from the disk manufacturer and as a consequence the disks must be shipped to the disk manufacturer for installation in the disk drives prior to incorporation in the completed computer. The disks are highly susceptible to contamination from a variety of sources, and must therefore be handled with extreme care to avoid such contamination. The support structure of this invention constitutes an expandible and contractible mandrel designed specifically to interact with the inner periphery of the annular magnetic disks in such a manner as to support a multiplicity of the disks in spaced parallel relation. In addition to the mandrel, there is also presented two different types of containers for storing and/or shipping a multiplicity of disks while they are being supported in spaced non-contiguous relation by the mandrel within the container. The container and mandrel cooperate to prevent the disks from coming in physical contact with the interior of the container. In one of the containers, the base of the container constitutes an auxiliary holding device for retaining the disks in spaced parallelism when the mandrel is removed from the assembly of disks.
