This invention concerns a process for modifying a polymeric substrate by contacting the surface with a photoreactive solution of an inorganic photochemical electron donor while irradiating the surface with actinic radiation. Patterns of modified and unmodified surfaces can be produced. Polymeric substrates with modified surfaces may be effectively bonded to polymer films to form composite articles. The process has particular applicability to the surface modification of fluorinated polymers.

Thermally stable polymers comprising resorcinol arylate chain members are prepared using an interfacial method comprising the steps of: interfacial method for preparing polymers comprising resorcinol arylate polyester chain members substantially free of anhydride linkages linking at least two mers of the polymer chain, comprising the steps of: (a) preparing an aqueous solution comprising at least one resorcinol moiety, said solution having a pH less than or equal to about 5; (b) after step (a), preparing a mixture comprising the resorcinol moiety, at least one catalyst and at least one organic solvent substantially immiscible with water; and (c) adding to the mixture from (b) at least one dicarboxylic acid dichloride while maintaining the pH between 3 and 8.5 through the presence of an acid acceptor, wherein the total molar amount of acid chloride groups is stoichiometrically deficient relative to the total molar amount of phenolic groups.

The present invention provides an asymmetric porous PTFE membrane for clothing having little change over time and conventionally known properties of a porous PTFE molded article such as water permeability resistance, air permeability, sealing properties and electric properties, in which durability and water vapor permeability are improved by strengthening adhesion strength with fabric. Specifically, the present invention relates to an asymmetric porous PTFE membrane for clothing comprising a dense skin layer and a continuously foamed porous layer, wherein(1) the contact angle of water to the surface of the skin layer is 120 to 140null; and (2) the diffuse reflectance of light of the skin layer is 91 to 94%.

The present invention is a flame-retardant polyester film including resin layers laminated on both surfaces of a polyester film, wherein the resin layer satisfies 15null(Wc1nullWc2)/Wc0null100null99 (where Wc0 represents the weight of the resin layer, Wc1 represents the weight of the resin layer after the temperature thereof is raised from 25null C. to 600null C. in air, and Wc2 represents the weight of the resin layer after the temperature thereof is raised from 25null C. to 800null C. in air), and has a non-flammable gas generating rate of 3 to 40 percent over the range of 180null C. to 450null C. The present invention provides a flame-retardant polyester film having an excellent flame retardancy, and adhesive tapes, flexible printed circuits, a membrane switch, a film heater, and a flat cable, each including the flame-retardant polyester film.
