Abstract: A wheel suspension is connected to a wheel carrier, which is connected to the vehicle body or an auxiliary frame via wheel guide members spaced vertically apart from each other. The wheel guide members are arranged above and below a horizontal plane. An elastokinematic axis and a kinematic trailing axis are formed, which results in an ideal swivel axis for the wheel. The wheel guide members comprise two open wishbones, which diverge in the direction of the body-sided bearings and are disposed in two planes, are spaced apart, and are hinged to the wheel carrier on both sides of a vertical wheel center transverse plane. The wheel guide members comprise an A-frame arm and a steering tie rod, the A-frame arm being hinged in front of the vertical wheel center transverse plane and located in an inclined plane, resulting in a pitching pole for antidive and antisquat.

Abstract: The wheel suspension system is dimensioned and positioned so as to be contained within a fore-and-aft profile of the engine assembly so that the wheel suspension system which is considered to be too rigid to define a crush zone in case of a vehicle crash is contained within the profile of the engine assembly, and would not in any way reduce the crush zone of the vehicle body which is effective in absorbing the impact energy of a vehicle crash. A steering gear may also be too rigid to define a crush zone. The engine assembly normally projects toward the passenger compartment at upper and lower parts thereof. Therefore, to avoid the steering mechanism from reducing the effective crush zone, the steering gear unit may be placed so as to oppose the recess thus defined in the engine assembly.

Abstract: A camber angle control suspension system includes left and right swing arms having ends connected to left and right axle shafts, and a trailing arm having opposite ends with downwardly bent elbows which are pivotally connected to the swing arms. The trailing arm is rotatably connected to a vehicle body by rotatable bushings mounted on the trailing arm. Shock absorbers are interposed between the swing arms and the vehicle body so as to make a connection therebetween, and springs are coiled around the shock absorbers. A stabilizer bar is fixed at opposite ends to the swing arms and connected to the vehicle body by rotatable bushings at a center portion thereof.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus related to the suspension and steering of all terrain vehicles (ATVs) are disclosed. An ATV having a frame and a wheel carrier for rotatably supporting a wheel is provided. A tie rod is coupled to the wheel carrier at an outer joint. An inner joint of the tie rod is preferably located in a desirable location. A method for identifying the desirable location may include the steps of defining a first reference plane associated with a full compression position of the suspension, defining a second reference plane associated with a full extension position of the suspension, identifying a reference line formed by an intersection of the first reference plane and the second reference plane, and selecting a location proximate the reference line as the desirable location for the inner joint.

Abstract: To enlarge the up and down stroke of a front wheel without changing the layout of a steering shaft and a tie rod. An upper arm and a lower arm are arranged in an upward and downward manner, respectively. The upper and lower arms are pivotably attached to a vehicle body and respective outer end portions thereof are connected by a knuckle. The upper arm constitutes substantially a triangular shape and is provided with a front pipe, a rear pipe and a vehicle body attaching portion. Furthermore, a joint pipe is provided with a ring-like portion and a ball joint is attached thereto. A rear end portion of the vehicle body attaching portion, an escape portion in the vicinity thereof and an attaching center of a cushion attaching portion provided on the joint pipe, are respectively arranged forward from a joint center line passing through center of the ball joint and orthogonal to a vehicle body center line.

Abstract: A suspension assembly for a motor vehicle includes upper and lower control arms pivotally attached to a frame member of the vehicle. A knuckle arm pivotally attaches to the upper and lower control arms moves along a substantially vertical axis in response to wheel movement caused by an uneven road surface. An actuation link is attached to one of the control arms at one end and to a damper assembly at another end. The damper assembly is disposed substantially within the frame member along a second axis transverse to vertical movement of the wheel and is actuated along the transverse axis in response movement of the control arm along the substantially vertical axis.

Abstract: A zero roll suspension system for a vehicle that includes a vehicle frame and a wheel assembly has an axis of rotation. The present system preferably includes first and second crossing members, each of which has a first end and a second end. One of the first and second ends of each of the first and second crossing members is adapted to be mated to a portion of the wheel assembly. The other of the first and second ends of each of the first and second crossing members is adapted to be mated to the vehicle frame. Abstract: An integrated assembly for large vehicles including independent suspension components, supporting side plates and axle and frame components. Each of the side plates is a weldment in which the main part is a series of metal plates formed by bending a single sheet. Pockets are formed on the outside surfaces of the side plates. The pockets support the upper ends of suspension components, i.e., a coil spring, a shock absorber and a jounce bumper, while the lower ends of the suspension components are carried by a lower control arm. The half-shafts of each axle, extend through the side plates which are carried by two C-shaped main frame members.
