The system also includes a compliant element connected along the axis to the actuator mass and one of the body and the suspension arm, and providing a predetermined level of mechanical compliance. A controller determines and generates the actuator force in response to a threshold acceleration of the vehicle body.

A suspension system for an amphibious vehicle is able to be locked in either a lowered or in a retracted position according to whether the vehicle is on land or in water, respectively. The suspension system includes a main suspension arm pivoted to a vehicle hull at one end thereof and has a rotably mounted road wheel thereon at an opposite end thereof. A moving mechanism operably attached to the pivoted main suspension arm enables the arm and the road wheel to be retracted relative to the hull. An upper suspension link is operably and pivotally connected to the road wheel end of said main suspension arm and has a pivoted joint intermediate its ends. The upper suspension link is operably engagable with a suspension position locking mechanism in both the lowered and retracted positions.

A spring and shock absorber are mounted to act along the same line or along parallel lines of action on a telescoping unit having one end pivotally connected to the horizontal arm and the other end adjustably connected to the body. Motor driven means have one end secured to the body and have another end connected to the unit and are adapted for inclining the unit more or less. A sensor on the horizontal arm is connected to the motor to drive it in one direction or the other according to the inclination of the horizontal arm as the vehicle load is increased or lightened. When the arm has been restored to its normal horizontal position, normal clearance between body and road is restored, and the suspension parameters are matched to the existing load.

A suspension for a motor vehicle, namely an automobile, having a body and a pair of upstanding steering knuckles on either side of the body with a wheel mounted for steering on each knuckle intermediate its ends. A pair of suspension members extends transversely of the body in the direction of one another, each member being pivoted at one end to the top of the steering knuckles and pivoted at the other end to the body, above its center of gravity. A rigid axle bar is articulated at its ends to the lower ends of the knuckles to keep them apart a predetermined distance so that swaying of the body as in a curve may cause banking of the knuckles and wheels toward the center of the curve. A lateral stabilization yoke formed of a pair of side legs and a bight has the ends of its legs connected to the axle bar. A pair of spring units are each connected at one end to the suspension members or to the yoke and to the body so as to transfer the weight of the body to the steering knuckles. A sway motion compensating lever is mounted for rotation about an axis extending through the center thereof and is connected, by means of levers, to the bight of the yoke and to the body, these levers being so arranged that swaying motion of the body relative to the bight causes rotation of the compensating lever about its axis whereby to allow the swaying motion of the body.
