摘要: A bonding agent for a ceramic decalcomania comprises a balanced combination of a fast acting solvent and a moderating agent. A thickening agent may also be present. The decalcomania may be applied to the article either before or after a glaze is applied. The use of such a bonding agent for adhering a decalcomania to ceramic ware permits glaze firing without the necessity of first removing the organic material in the decalcomania and fusing the pigment to the ceramic article by prior heat treatment.

摘要: Heat and wear resistance and other properties of refractory bricks are improved by embedding them in a special powder and heating them in an oxygen-free atmosphere at 900*-1,100* C. for 18-36 hours. The powder is prepared by heating bauxite powder slowly to 950*-1,100* C. and keeping it there for 10-15 hours, then cooling and comminuting the powder and admixing 40-60 percent by weight of it with 40-60 percent by weight of powdered aluminum and 1-6 percent by weight of powdered ammonium chloride, then annealing this intermediate powder at 950*-1,100* C. for 2226 hours, cooling and comminuting and admixing 10-20 percent by weight powdered aluminum and 0.5-3 percent by weight powdered aluminum chloride.

摘要: The presence of both copper and zinc algicides in a moisture permeable, substantially water insoluble silicate-clay coating on base mineral roofing granules is found to enhance the resistance of roofing surfaces containing such granules to discoloration due to the growth of algae and/or fungi during extended periods of exposure to atmospheric weathering. During periods of rain and dew, zinc and copper ions are slowly leached from the granule coating, with the presence of both zinc and copper ions producing a bimetallic toxic effect that is particularly effective in retarding the biological growth of said algae and/or fungi. Relatively small amounts of said zinc and copper algicides can be employed, e.g. from about 0.5 to about 0.5 percent by weight of each said algicide, based on the total weight of base mineral granules. The zinc algicide is thus employed at a level at which such a zinc algicide alone has been found ineffective, but that, together with the copper algicide, produces a toxic effect superior to that obtained by incorporation of the copper algicide alone in the granule coating at an equivalent dosage.

摘要: 1. The process for coating graphite with an adherent, continuous layer of metallic carbide comprising the steps of disposing a quantity of a refractory, carbide forming metal to be carburized in a contiguous, generally spaced relation with a smooth graphite surface, said spacing being sufficient to permit flow of a gas between said surface and said metal, enclosing said assembly with a nonreacting gaseous atmosphere containing methane, heating said assembly to a temperature above the decomposition point of said methane and slightly above the softening point of said metal, whereby a quantity of said methane undergoes pyrolysis and deposits carbon on said graphite and said metallic surfaces, and quickly raising the temperature of said assembly to a point at which carburization occurs.
