Systems and methods for liquid-phase oxidation of an aromatic feedstock containing at least one oxidizable aromatic compound may incorporate an oxidation reactor, a separation apparatus in fluidic communication with the oxidation reactor, a solids treatment unit, and a product recovery unit in fluidic communication with the separation apparatus. The oxidation reactor may conduct liquid-phase oxidation of the oxidizable aromatic compound in the aromatic feedstock in the presence of a manganate salt to form a slurry containing liquid product and solid manganese dioxide. The separation apparatus may accept the slurry from the oxidation reactor and separate the liquid component from the solid component. The solids treatment unit accepts the solid component from the separation apparatus, treats the solid component with a basic liquid to oxidize the manganese dioxide in the solid component and form a regenerated manganate salt, which may be recycled back to the oxidation reactor.

Toluene is virtually impossible to separate from similar boiling non-aromatic hydrocarbons by conventional rectification or distillation. Toluene can be readily separated from similar boiling non-aromatic hydrocarbons by using extractive distillation in which the extractive agent is a mixture of phthalic anhydride and/or maleic anhydride plus a suitable solvent. A typical mixture comprises phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride and glycerol triacetate.

Novel chlorinated 4-methylphthalic acids or anhydrides of the general formula ##STR1## wherein n is an integer of 1, 2 or 3, with the proviso that when n is 1, the chlorine atom is positioned at 3- or 5-position and when n is 2, the chlorine atoms are positioned at 3- and 5-positions. The new compounds are produced by dissolving 4-methylphthalic anhydride in concentrated sulfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid to form a solution, and reacting the solution with chlorine at room temperature preferably in the presence of a catalytic amount of iodine, thereby to yield a crude product containing a mixture of chlorinated 4-methylphthalic acids. By subjecting the mixture to a thermal dehydration treatment in an inactive organic solvent, each of the chlorinated compounds may be isolated as its corresponding anhydride in the form of crystals.These chlorinated 4-methylphthalic anhydrides are valuable as intermediates for the preparation of dyestuffs or pigments.

There is provided a process to recover phthalic anhydride from a plastic material which contains a phthalate ester as a plasticizer comprising the steps of: (a) heating the plastic material so that the plastic material is gasified to produce a first product, (b) contacting the first product with alumina catalyst so that the product is catalytically cracked to produce a first catalytically cracked product comprising phthalic anhydride; and (c) recovering phthalic anhydride from the first catalytically cracked product.
